I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 38
Cole’s expression twisted for a moment. He met my gaze directly. “Urging you to get married was just wanting to see a hurt look on your face. Wanting your special treatment. Believe it or not, you’re the only one I’ve ever loved. Even if you hadn’t come today, I wouldn’t have gotten engaged to Sabrina.”
My face was pale.
“Cole, stop. Keep talking, and I might actually throw up.”
He frowned. Was about to say something more—
Suddenly, someone came barreling down the corridor toward us.
Sabrina. Still in her engagement party gown. The hem was filthy. She marched up to Cole. From her pocket, she pulled out a crumpled medical report.
The moment I saw that paper, my heart sank.
Sure enough, the next second, Sabrina wept. “Cole, do you know why I pushed you to get engaged? Because I don’t have much time left. The only dream I’ve ever had is to marry the person I love. I have a month at most. Could you just pity me? Stay with me till the end? Even if it’s a lie?”
She was young. Decent-looking. Saying something so pitiful, she moved many of the passersby.
Cole looked at the lab report. Terminal pancreatic cancer. His pupils contracted sharply.
Sabrina turned. Her knees buckled. She actually knelt down in front of me. “Victoria, I know you’ve secretly loved Cole for years. But must you be in such a hurry? You could easily wait until I’m dead to be with Cole.”
