I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 39

Her words were deliberately vague.

As if I was the third party, seizing an opening.

The onlookers immediately pointed fingers at me. Censuring me for being shameless.

The irritation in my chest swelled. I said coldly, “Sabrina, stop spewing nonsense. Cole and I have nothing to do with each other. I have a husband. As for you, keep an eye on your Cole. Tell him to stop harassing me.”

Cole clutched the medical report, knuckles white. His gaze was deep. “Victoria, after I fulfill Sabrina’s final wish, I’ll come find you.”

Like a bad penny.

I frowned. Didn’t want to spare this self-righteous man a single glance.

On the other side, learning of Sabrina’s “cancer,” Cole’s sympathy erupted. Decided to take meticulous care of her.

Naturally, Sabrina intended to milk this for all it was worth.

Only she’d never learned what consideration was. Usually, her hysterics were seen by Cole as adorable.

Back home, she escalated. Demanded Cole wait in long lines to buy things she wanted to eat. Demanded he set aside work to take her on countryside picnic dates.

Every time Cole questioned if this was really her dying wish, she’d pout and cry about how poor her family was when she was young. How she’d never experienced anything. If he didn’t want to, fine.

Every single time, Cole held his nose and did it.

On the surface, Cole was still endlessly doting. But inside, he no longer found Sabrina’s coquettishness and “frankness” cute at all.

Instead, he couldn’t help comparing her to me. Told her to be quiet. Maybe read a book. It’d be good for her health anyway.

What broke him most? Cole lost his job.
