I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 37
I froze.
When I saw those photos, I’d already decided in my head he was unfaithful. Never bothered to verify.
So I really had been mistaken.
In truth, I really did want to live that “good life” with Spencer he kept talking about.
It was just, somehow, I’d developed a habit. Always casting myself as the victim. The one who never made mistakes. This time, having to admit fault, I found it hard to say the words.
I was still rehearsing in my head.
Spencer took my silence as rejection. He cried so hard he could barely catch his breath. The white gauze wrapped around his throat rapidly bloomed crimson. “Victoria, even you bully me. Why won’t you just believe me?”
Stiff, my hand held by his, I was at a complete loss. Rushed to hit the emergency call button.
After a flurry of chaos, Spencer, sedated, fell into a deep sleep.
I sighed. Walked out of the hospital room. Wanted a cigarette to decompress.
Cole was standing right outside the door. Staring at me. “Victoria, I’m going to pursue you again. I’m fulfilling the promise I made three years ago.”
I was dumbfounded.
Did he still suspect I wasn’t over him?
I immediately explained. “Cole, I’m married. And I have no plans to divorce at the moment. You’re also engaged. Don’t say things that could easily be misinterpreted, okay?”
Cole was resolute. “You and Spencer aren’t right for each other. I’m the only one who fits you.”
Sometimes, being too polite just encourages people to push their luck.
My face went cold. Mocking. “Cole, you’re right for me? Three years ago, you said we were too alike. Too competitive. Couldn’t go the distance. Now, you’re saying we fit. That’s strange. At the reunion, weren’t you the one urging me to get married? Now you’re swearing you’re going to pursue me?”
