My phone rang. Cole. His voice was cautious. “Victoria, why aren’t you at the firm today? There are some New York State precedents I still haven’t sorted out. I need your help going over them.”
I grunted an “mm.”
Spencer hadn’t broken his word. He’d hired Cole as the company’s legal counsel as agreed.
Cole said he’d just returned to the country. Wanted to hire me to help him sort things out. At the market rate of six hundred an hour.
I had no reason to refuse.
Avoiding him outright would only make it seem like I still had feelings I needed to hide.
By the time I reached the firm, it was already noon.
I thought today there would be no lunch from Spencer.
To my surprise, it still arrived right on time.
Cole watched me eat. A flash of jealousy crossed his eyes. Said, bitter, “Mr. Prescott doesn’t seem too skilled in the kitchen. So much soy sauce. Doesn’t he know you prefer light flavors?”
I said flatly, “I never liked light flavors. I just ate that way because you did.”
Cole froze. Slowly, his eyes grew redder. “Victoria, I always thought you were too cold. Always felt you didn’t love me as much as I loved you. Was terrified that if I didn’t push myself to the breaking point, you’d leave me behind one day. Did I really… make the wrong choice?”
Just changing my diet for him moved him this much.
If he knew I’d sunk into depression for half a year over him, he’d probably think I’d never love another man in this lifetime.
I deliberately let his words go in one ear and out the other.
When I finished eating, I said to him, “You don’t need to come anymore. With your ability, you can figure it out yourself… Also.”
I pulled out my phone. Showed him the abusive, vile messages Sabrina had sent me. “Your fiancée is very upset.”
