Cole’s face went paper-white.
After that, he didn’t come back.
Two days later, I attended their engagement party as promised.
A simple, elegant black dress. Appropriate. Not attention-grabbing.
The moment my classmates saw me, they swarmed like sharks scenting blood.
Gossip. It’s human nature.
They nudged me, eyes darting meaningfully. “Victoria, you actually came to Cole’s engagement party? When you see him on stage with Sabrina, don’t you dare faint.”
“You’re not planning to object, are you? Fine. If you charge up there, I’ll help hold Sabrina back.”
They all knew how badly I’d fallen apart when I lost my voice.
Even though I’d later sternly told them not to spread this dark history around, they were utterly convinced I was still hopelessly devoted to Cole.
I extended my hand. Said, exasperated, “Sorry. I never told you. I got married a long time ago. Cole and I, that’s ancient history. Please, no more of these jokes. I don’t want anyone getting the wrong idea.”
On my right ring finger, a pigeon’s-egg-sized diamond refracted their stunned expressions.
Yesterday, when Spencer heard I was attending Cole’s engagement party, he’d specifically dug out the wedding ring and made me wear it.
I told him to come himself. He’d pulled a face and said the private investigator he’d hired had uncovered some leads. He’d find me later.
To avoid unnecessary drama, I’d listened to him and put the ring on.
But the others quickly snapped out of it. “Come on, Victoria. Stop pretending. Where’d you buy that fake? A smaller one would be more believable. Showing up at your ex’s engagement party. There’s no shame in it.”
“Someone as pure as you, married? If you’re married, then I’m on my second divorce.”
They refused to believe it. I couldn’t force them. Sighed, helpless.
On stage, Cole stood in a Tom Ford suit. Boutonniere on his lapel. Devastatingly handsome.
Exactly as I’d always imagined.
