I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 20
Outside the courthouse, his best friend, Ted, came up to us.
He gave me an awkward smile. “Victoria, didn’t get the divorce, huh?”
One bland look from me, and he lowered his head, guilty.
When we started dating, Spencer made a point of introducing me to his friends.
It was this Ted who led the charge in ignoring me. Led the others to scorn me too.
Naively, I’d thought Spencer’s friends just felt my family background was lacking. That I wasn’t good enough for him. I worked hard to win them over.
Until the wedding. Ted had been sullenly silent. But the moment Blair appeared, he clapped and cheered.
And he never stopped embellishing things for me. Telling me how Spencer had sworn since childhood he’d marry Blair. Bringing up all their little childhood stories. Shutting me out completely.
Later, the video of Spencer “proposing” to Blair on the cruise ship—he was the one who sent it to me.
He’d sent it with a smug message. “Spencer is too sentimental to say it. So I will. You’re just a stand-in for Blair. The real deal is back. Do us all a favor and bow out gracefully.”
Now here he was, hypocritically asking if I’d gotten divorced.
I didn’t speak. Spencer said cheerfully, “No. If Victoria really had divorced me, I would never have forgiven you.”
Ted breathed a sigh of relief. Patted his chest. “Boss, I know I messed up. I’ll never dare do it again.”
I said nothing. Pressed my key fob. The Bentley’s lights flashed.
I opened the driver’s door. Slid in. Started the engine.
Spencer tried the passenger door twice. Locked. He stood there, shocked. “Honey, you’re not coming home with me? We’re husband and wife. A separation, what’s that supposed to mean?”
“And my parents said they want to see you.”
