I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 21

Mention of Spencer’s parents made my grip on the steering wheel tighten.

After Spencer and I got our marriage license, I only then learned his story about his parents being divorced and wanting nothing to do with him was all a lie.

I also only then learned he was, in fact, the ridiculously pampered only son of the Prescott family.

When his parents found out we’d gotten married, they were furious. Nearly had their bodyguards throw me out of New York.

Spencer stood in front of me. Cried. Said if they wanted to hurt me, they’d have to go through him first. That was the only reason I wasn’t destroyed.

On our wedding day, his parents didn’t even show up. Their way of expressing their displeasure.

How could I have forgotten? I could use his parents to facilitate the divorce.

They’d never welcomed me anyway. They’d be thrilled to see me leave and make room for Blair.

At that thought, I unlocked the doors. “Get in.”

This time, I didn’t drive to the villa in Spencer’s name. I drove straight to the Prescott estate.

I’d never had a reason to come here before.

Spencer held my hand the whole time, as if terrified I’d bolt.

The estate staff addressed Spencer respectfully as “young master.” They ignored me completely.

Spencer didn’t seem to notice. Pushed open the main door.

Even prepared, the interior decoration of the estate still made me inwardly gape.

Someone had actually decorated their home like the Palace of Versailles. Resplendent. The lighting was dizzying.

Mr. Prescott sat on the sofa watching financial news. Mrs. Prescott was off to the side, holding Blair’s hand, chatting away, her face wreathed in smiles.

The door swung open. When their eyes landed on me, both their expressions tightened. Undisguised loathing.

Blair immediately withdrew her hand. Walked up. Her eyes red, she bowed to me. “I’m sorry, Victoria. I was wrong. I’ve always seen Spencer as a little brother. I never imagined you’d take it this way. He was just celebrating my birthday, and you escalated it to a divorce. It’s my fault.”
