I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 19
For some reason, a look of utter misery settled on Cole’s face. As if he was hiding infinite unspoken pain.
Sabrina looked triumphant. “Mr. Prescott, my boyfriend is incredible. Back at Harvard, he and Victoria were neck and neck. Always rivals.”
At the word “rivals,” some of the wariness in Spencer’s eyes faded.
He’d been too sheltered. His whole life, people only ever flattered him, orbited around him. He carried an inherent arrogance. Sniffed. “Mr. Donovan, do you know why some people live a long time?”
“Why?”
“Because they mind their own damn business. Mr. Donovan, you and Victoria are just classmates. Don’t get your fingers in our marriage.”
Cole’s face turned an alarming shade of dark.
Watching them go head-to-head, I suddenly remembered something. Asked Cole, “Mr. Donovan, you said earlier you had something to tell me after court. What was it?”
Cole’s expression froze. After a long pause, he forced a bitter smile. Took Sabrina’s hand. “Sabrina and I have an engagement party in a few days. I hope you’ll be sure to attend.”
So he was afraid I hadn’t given up. Needed me there to watch them flaunt their love.
Fine. It would save our classmates from always trying to pair me and Cole together.
I nodded. “I will.”
Spencer scowled. Wrapped an arm around my shoulder, cheery again. “Honey, let’s go home.”
I pried his hand off.
He wasn’t bothered.
Sometimes I really envied him.
Any problem placed in front of him, as long as it had a temporary label, was already sunshine and rainbows again.
