Realizing all eyes in the room had converged on her, Blair’s expression twisted for a split second. Then she said, still gentle, “Spencer, what is going on? I was only joking around.”
Spencer’s voice was ice. “Blair, I used to indulge you. But this time, you’ve gone too far. This isn’t the time for jokes. Go apologize to Victoria right now. Tell her we are completely innocent.”
A man’s pride is everything to him. Slapping Blair was probably just to maintain his image.
I never shied away from thinking the worst of people.
I shook my head. A sardonic smile touched my lips. “No need, Spencer. Seems mediation won’t be necessary.”
Soon, court was back in session.
When I submitted the audio recording of Blair’s testimony just now, Spencer took a deep breath.
He pulled a medical report from his pocket. Said, arrogantly, “Victoria is pregnant. Four weeks. This proves our relationship has not broken down. There’s no reason to divorce.”
Cole went pale.
I froze. Looked at Spencer.
Then I saw him chewing his lip. The dead skin had split. A bead of blood welled up.
He was lying.
But for him, faking a pregnancy test was the simplest thing in the world.
If I were pregnant, the law would inevitably lean toward preserving the family unit.
The gavel fell. I lost.
I said nothing. Just gathered my things.
Cole, inexplicably agitated, marched up to me. “Why didn’t you prepare more evidence? How could you be so sloppy? Were you even trying to win? You never used to do something so uncertain.”
He really did know me well.
The divorce lawsuit was a decision made on impulse.
I knew perfectly well. Without concrete proof of infidelity, without financial disputes, the chances of a court granting a divorce were vanishingly small.
I nodded. “Yeah. Lost my head.”
Cole’s expression was ugly. As if he was the one who’d lost.
