Sorting through each photo forced me to relive the heartbreak I’d felt when I first received those messages.
I still remember. After Cole left, I got dead drunk every single day. I’d stumble out of a bar and pass out right on the curb.
That was when Spencer found me.
He took me to the hospital. Before I could even speak, he introduced himself, buzzing with energy. “Hi, my name is Spencer Prescott. I found you. What’s wrong? Why did you drink so much?”
With difficulty, I typed a thank you on my phone.
He casually added my contact info. Came to visit every single day.
He bustled around, tirelessly searching for treatments for my throat.
I typed the question a hundred times. Why are you being so good to me? He blushed. Said it was love at first sight.
My world, which had fallen silent, was suddenly filled with noise because of his intrusion.
I often thought of Cole’s words back then. He said we were too alike. Excessively quiet. Rational. We needed someone complementary to spend the rest of our lives with.
So I wanted to try. To see if a man completely different from Cole could actually make me feel happier. I said yes to Spencer’s pursuit.
After we got together, I had to admit, Cole was right.
Spencer would snatch the book from my hands. He’d beg me to go out and play with him. He’d accompany me to try everything I’d never wanted to try before. Brought me new surprises every day.
The day my voice recovered thanks to his efforts, he proposed.
I was stunned.
For seven years, I’d hinted to Cole about wanting to get married. He always dodged. Always said we were too young. That we needed to establish our careers more. Told me to wait a little longer.
But Spencer, who’d only been with me for half a year, brought it up.
That was when I realized. It wasn’t my fault. Loving someone means wanting to marry them. Wanting to plan them into the rest of your life.
Cole just didn’t love me. He didn’t want to be part of my life plan.
