I Never Loved You Anyway Chapter 07

His gaze sharpened, and his muscles went completely rigid.

A low, warning growl rumbled deep in his throat — a werebeast’s instinctive reaction to a threat.

Startled, I grabbed his hand.

“Honey, what’s wrong?”

He snapped back to reality.

The second he saw the worry on my face, the defensiveness in his eyes vanished.

“Nothing,” he murmured, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze.

His hand was huge, and as the rough scar on his palm brushed the back of my hand, a sudden wave of sadness washed over me.

He might have returned to the Ellison family and started wearing expensive clothes, but deep down, he was still the same wolf who had fought desperately to survive in the arena.

Over the next couple of days, I found different little ways to test him.

One evening while we were watching TV, I deliberately put on a highly violent, terrifying aberrant werebeast movie.

Logan never watched movies like this; he would always just sit nearby and quietly read.

But Micah was different. Even though physical danger rarely fazed him, he was absolutely terrified of ghosts and slimy, soft-bodied monsters.

When a tentacled monster on the screen suddenly lunged at the camera, Micah flinched hard.

He instantly curled his tail, wedging it tight into the gap of the sofa, while his wolf ears pinned flat against his head.

Pretending to be terrified, I grabbed his arm and buried my face in his chest.

“Honey, I’m scared.”

Micah went stiff as a board.

“D-don’t be scared,” he stammered. “It’s fake. Just special effects.”

His heart was hammering in his chest. The loud, forceful thumping against my ear was almost deafening.

I closed my eyes. Hearing that familiar, racing heartbeat immediately transported me back to the time we’d spent trapped in that stuffy storage room.

“Honey, your heart is beating really fast,” I murmured, looking straight up at him to gauge his reaction.

Micah quickly looked away, swallowing hard. “The scene just startled me.”

I didn’t push it. I just stayed quiet, resting my head against his chest.

He hesitated for a long moment, but ultimately didn’t push me away.

Finally, his large, warm hand settled gently on my back, patting me in a clumsy, irregular rhythm.

It was the exact same way he used to soothe my panic attacks back then — with that same incredible gentleness.

Meanwhile, things weren’t going nearly as well for Logan.

Posing as Micah, he knocked on Genevieve’s door.

She answered in a red silk robe. Leaning lazily against the doorframe, a wineglass in hand, she looked him up and down.

“So,” she drawled, raising a teasing eyebrow, “you’re the new mate the Matching Center sent over? Micah?”

Logan stared at the gorgeous face he obsessed over day and night. “Yeah,” he said, his voice trembling with excitement. “I am.”

Genevieve let out a soft laugh and stepped aside to let him in.

Thrilled to finally be living with the woman he loved, Logan was desperate to please her.

But he seemed to have conveniently forgotten one crucial detail — Genevieve was a level-S werebeast with an infamous military temper.

With her razor-sharp senses, there was absolutely no way she wouldn’t recognize the man standing right in front of her.

On their first night, Logan offered to cook, whipping up all her favorite dishes.

Sitting at the table, Genevieve took a bite of the honey-glazed chicken and gave him a knowing smile.

“You’re a good cook. Just as good as your brother. You even use the exact same amount of sugar.”

Logan tensed, forcing a chuckle. “Is that right? Well, we grew up together. Guess we share the same tastes.”

Genevieve set her fork down and leaned in, studying his face intently.

“Logan, do you honestly think losing my mate made me stupid?”
