I Never Loved You Anyway Chapter 08

His fake smile vanished as cold sweat broke out on his forehead. “What… what are you talking about? Genevieve, you must have me confused with Logan.”

Genevieve scoffed, grabbed her wineglass, and tossed her drink right in his face.

Red wine dripped from his hair, leaving him a sodden mess.

“Drop the act.” Genevieve slammed her hand onto the table, rattling the silverware. “Whenever you get nervous, your tail twitches to the left. Micah’s tail stays perfectly straight. Plus, the scent of fir wood incense is baked right into your skin. Did you really think a change of clothes would hide your actual scent from me?”

Logan went pale. He stood up abruptly, finally dropping the charade. “Genny, I—”

“Shut up!” she snapped. “Who said you could call me Genny? You make me sick.”

Logan’s eyes grew red. When he spoke, his voice broke, heavy with bitter resentment. “Genny, I just wanted to see you. If I hadn’t mistaken her for you back then, we’d be together right now. You saved me, but I ended up bonded with Roxanne — who’s totally unemotional. Every single day, I look at her face, which is identical to yours, and you’re the only thing I can think about.”

Genevieve paused, then burst out laughing. She laughed so hard her eyes watered, pointing a shaking finger right at him.

“Saved you? You actually think I was the one who rescued you on the back mountain?”

Logan froze, completely bewildered. “Weren’t you? You were the only one there when I woke up. And with your level-S mental power, you’re the only one who could’ve suppressed that violent aberrant werebeast…”

Genevieve’s smile vanished. She stared at Logan like he was a complete idiot, though a deep sadness lingered in her eyes.

“Logan, you’re an absolute, oblivious fool.”

She stood up and looked down at him.

“When I got there, that level-A aberrant werebeast was already ripped to pieces. I didn’t save you. Roxanne did.”

“That’s impossible!” Logan said, shaking his head frantically. “Roxanne is barely a level-D. She couldn’t even fight off a normal wild animal. How could she possibly kill a level-A aberrant? You have to be lying!”

“Why would I waste my time lying to a fool like you?” Genevieve snapped, her jaw clenched. “Her mental power used to be level-SS! She was the most talented werebeast the Alston family had seen in a century. But your internal organs were punctured by that monster. To save an ungrateful jerk like you, she permanently drained her core mental energy. She killed that beast with sheer, overwhelming force, just to keep you alive!

“She completely burned out her mental power doing it, leaving her practically powerless in everyone else’s eyes. When I found her, she was lying in the mud, covered in blood, tightly clutching a torn scrap of your clothes!”

Logan slumped back in his chair, shaking uncontrollably. His mind went totally blank, a loud ringing echoing in his ears.

“No… that can’t be true… why didn’t she tell me?”

“What good would telling you do?” Genevieve said coldly, her eyes full of contempt. “The second you woke up, you grabbed my hand and called me your savior. Then you sent a bonding application straight to the Matching Center. Like a fool, Roxanne saw the photo and assumed it was your brother, so she agreed right away. Watching this whole pathetic mess play out between you two makes me sick!”

Logan buried his face in his hands, letting out an anguished sob as tears slipped through his fingers.

It finally hit him just how horribly wrong he had been.

He had treated the woman who actually saved his life like a cheap stand-in, shutting her out emotionally for an entire year. He had even mocked her low mental power in front of his friends, acting like he had settled by bonding with her.

He thought he was the one making a difficult compromise, but in reality, he was just a clueless guy completely blind to the truth.

“Get out,” Genevieve ordered, pointing at the front door. “Don’t dirty my carpet.”

Logan stumbled clumsily out of the house and sprinted home in a blind panic.

He had to find Roxanne. He needed to explain everything and beg for her forgiveness.

Then, everything fell apart.
