I Never Loved You Anyway Chapter 06
I stared at the closed door, a mischievous smile creeping across my face.
Whatever?
I thought, “Wolf, you’re under my roof now.”
“For the next seven days, you definitely won’t be doing whatever you want.”
“We will see.”
“And we can do something with the real fun.”
Around noon, I threw on an apron and spent a good chunk of time cooking.
Carrying a plate of spaghetti with tomato meat sauce and a plate of beef and bell pepper stir-fry, I knocked on the study door and let myself in.
Micah was sitting at the computer, staring blankly at a monitor full of spreadsheets. He had a deep scowl on his face, clearly failing to make any sense of the business data.
The second he saw me, he sat up straight, schooled his expression, and pretended to be deep into the documents.
“Eat first. You need to take a break for lunch, even when you’re busy,” I said, offering a sweet smile as I set the food on his desk.
He eyed the plates, a faint twitch tugging at his brow.
I laughed to myself. Logan wasn’t a picky eater, but I knew Wolf absolutely despised bell peppers and tomatoes.
Back in the fighting arena, he would’ve rather starved and taken a beating than touch nutrient paste mixed with diced peppers. He used to complain that it was completely vile and downright inedible.
“What’s wrong? Do you not like it?” I leaned in close, keeping my voice intentionally soft so my warm breath brushed against his ear.
Micah leaned away on instinct, the tips of his ears burning bright pink.
“No, it’s fine.” He grabbed his fork with obvious reluctance and forced a piece of bell pepper into his mouth.
After a couple of chews, his face contorted in disgust. His eyes turned red and immediately started watering.
“What’s wrong, honey? A little too spicy?” I fought back a laugh, playing the concerned partner as I patted his back and handed him a glass of water.
He took a massive gulp, finally managing to choke the pepper down. Taking a heavy breath, he said, “I’m fine. Just swallowed wrong.”
Watching him suffer in frustrated silence was deeply satisfying.
The second he choked down the last bite, he practically sprinted to the bathroom to rinse his mouth out.
As I gathered up the empty dishes, I caught sight of his white tail through the crack in the bathroom door. It was thrashing back and forth, smacking loudly against the doorframe.
He was absolutely adorable.
Later that afternoon, I suggested a grocery run.
“Come with me, honey. We need to stock up, and I can’t carry it all by myself,” I said, tugging at the hem of his shirt and playing up the helpless act.
Micah clearly wanted to say no, but after catching my deliberately pathetic look, he gave a reluctant nod.
At the supermarket, I made a point of steering our cart right down the snack aisle.
“Honey, I want chips,” I said, pointing up at the tomato-flavored ones on the top shelf.
Micah reached up and grabbed a bag for me.
“I want that jelly, too,” I added.
“And the beef jerky.”
I kept him busy fetching items from all over the aisle.
Micah kept a straight face through it all, moving with quiet efficiency. But when he spotted some bone-shaped cookies, his interest visibly piqued, and he quietly slipped two boxes into the cart.
Up at the register, the cashier gave me a warm smile. “Your mate really takes care of you, buying all these snacks.”
Micah’s ears flushed bright red. He quickly turned his head away, pretending to be completely fascinated by something outside.
Walking home with our two heavy grocery bags, we passed a dark, narrow alley.
Out of nowhere, a few stray cats darted across our path. They were fighting fiercely over a scrap of food, letting out sharp, distressed screeches.
Micah stopped dead in his tracks.
