His thoughts drifted back seven years.
It had been in an old Back Bay house awaiting restoration — dusty, luminous, sunlight pouring through the shattered panes. The first time he’d laid eyes on Sabine, she wore a hard hat, sketching over blueprints and patiently explaining the history of the load-bearing walls to the construction crew.
In that instant, worn down by the glittering emptiness of the finance world, he had decided he wanted to spend the rest of his life with this woman who could see straight to the heart of things.

It wasn’t until that blood-stained miscarriage report was laid in front of him that he was forced to confess it: the Sabine bent over her blueprints, the Sabine who had built him a home, and every last thing that had remained between them — he had destroyed all of it with his own two hands.
