The moment Damon made bail, he went straight to Massachusetts General Hospital.
When he shoved open the door to the hospital room, his breathing was still ragged. Sabine sat propped against her pillows, calmly turning the pages of an architecture magazine, sunlight slanting across her from the window.
“Sabine…” His voice came out hoarse.
Sabine lowered the magazine and studied his haggard face, her own expression unruffled.
“Mr. Crane,” she said, her tone cool and remote, as though greeting a stranger across a conference table. “What are you doing here? Our engagement has already been called off.”
That Mr. Crane drained the blood from Damon’s face.
“I… I came to apologize.” He took a step closer, his voice weighed down with defeat. “I never should have doubted you. Sabine, I…”
What he didn’t say was that back at the police station, he had watched all of it — every frame.
The Ring camera had recorded everything: him barring the door, him standing there as she fell. And then the service corridor at the yacht club — Seraphina and Gideon, locked in a kiss.
Only then had he understood that everything he’d trusted had been a lie. The child he’d believed was his own wasn’t. The “victim” he had fought so hard to shield had been deceiving him from the very first day.
