Those two words landed like a sledgehammer, smashing what remained of Odette’s hope. Her knees folded, and she sank to the floor.
Seraphina, white-faced, darted to Gideon and clutched his arm. “Are you out of your mind? Gideon! You can’t admit that! This is Sabine’s trap!”
“That’s enough, Seraphina.” Gideon shrugged her off. For the first time, his face wore a bone-deep weariness that looked almost like resolve. “I can’t keep doing this.”
He turned, his gaze moving over his shattered wife and Damon’s livid face, his voice hollow as he laid it all out.
“Seraphina and I were together in college. But her family looked down on me and tore us apart. They made her marry you, Damon.”
“A few years ago, when the two of you separated, we got back together.”
Every sentence was a blade, cutting into each person in the room.
“That child… is mine. I was the one who told her to work your guilt over Sabine, to work your obsession with a perfect family, and pull you back to her side.”
Damon stood frozen. He had always believed he was the one running things. Now he saw he was only the most laughable pawn on their board.
Slowly, Odette pushed herself up off the floor. Her tears had dried, leaving her eyes hollow. She looked at Gideon, her voice light and unmoored.
“So… our marriage, everything I did for you — was it all because you couldn’t have her, and you settled for me instead? A stand-in. A tool to help you climb?”
She asked her last question the way someone demands a sentence they already know is coming.
“Did you ever love me?”
Gideon didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
