Silence bore down on the room.
Odette suddenly rounded on Seraphina, her eyes blazing with pure hatred.
Smack.
She slapped Seraphina across the face. “You! This was all you! You dragged me into this! You ruined everything!”
The living room erupted into chaos. The baby in the crib, jolted awake by the screaming, broke into terrified sobs.
Seraphina cupped her cheek. “I ruined you? Odette, stop playing the innocent! You were jealous of Sabine — jealous of everything she had in Boston. That’s why you bent over backward to fawn over me, trying to claw your way into the Greenwich circle!”
She advanced a step, her voice climbing higher and shriller. “You’re the one who kept clinging to a married man — Gideon! And now you want to pin the blame on me?”
“A middle-class girl from suburban New Jersey — who do you think was ever really going to be your friend, apart from an idiot like Sabine?”
“Ah-!” Odette shrieked and threw herself at Seraphina.
Just as she was about to seize a fistful of Seraphina’s hair, an arm shot out between them.
Gideon.
He shoved his wife hard.
Odette had no time to react. The back of her head cracked against the doorframe with a dull thud.
Reeling, she slid to the floor and heard Gideon’s cold voice from above her.
“You can’t hurt Seraphina. And you can’t hurt the child.”
