The lawyer didn’t stop. He kept reading from his notes, word for word.
“The recorded conversation shows Mr. Gideon Fenwick saying to Mrs. Crane, ‘You can’t keep using Damon like this. That child is mine.'”
The dead hush in the living room turned absolute.
Damon’s hand jerked, and he nearly lost his grip on the phone.
The lawyer pressed on. “The conversation further confirms that, in order to help Mrs. Crane secure her position, Mr. Gideon Fenwick volunteered to use his legal expertise to frame his sister, Miss Sabine Fenwick.”
“No!”
Odette snatched the phone out of Damon’s hand and screamed into it, “That’s a lie! Sabine made it up! She forged it, didn’t she?!”
Silence was the only reply she got.
Odette wheeled around, her eyes bloodshot, glaring at her husband and Seraphina. Her voice shook so violently it barely sounded human.
“Tell me this is fake! Gideon! Tell them the video was doctored!”
She waited, desperate for one last denial, even a lie.
Seraphina’s face was ashen. She took a step back, unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
And Gideon just stood there. Under his wife’s frantic pleading, he stayed silent for a long, heavy stretch.
At last, he lifted his head. His eyes were empty as they found Odette, his voice a raw, barely audible whisper.
“I’m sorry, Odette.”
“It’s true.”
