Odette’s voice sliced through the empty living room, as though she were trying to convince herself more than anyone else.
“We were only trying to help her… Why didn’t she tell us she was pregnant? For all we know, she faked this. Just another one of her pity plays!”
“Odette’s right,” Seraphina put in, though her eyes flicked toward Gideon in a flash of alarm.
Right then, Damon’s phone started ringing.
He answered on speaker, a stunned look on his face. A calm, professional voice came down the line.
“Mr. Crane, this is Sabine Fenwick’s attorney. My client has formally requested a police investigation into the infant’s disappearance at the Greenwich yacht club. The police have already secured all the surveillance footage.”
Seraphina and Gideon turned pale.
The lawyer’s voice went on, flat and without feeling. “The footage shows that during the window Mrs. Crane claims she was being harassed, she was in the service corridor, arguing privately with Mr. Gideon Fenwick.”
“It was the two of them who caused the stroller to be left at the corridor’s exit.”
Odette went rigid. Slowly, she turned her head, staring first at her husband, then at Seraphina.
She looked at them as if they were total strangers.
