Seraphina’s phone rang, the sound tearing through the silence.
It was the head of security from the Greenwich yacht club.
“Mrs. Crane? The baby’s been found, unharmed, in the service corridor. We need you to come back as soon as you can.”
That one sentence cleared me.
A moment earlier, they’d had me surrounded, playing victim and judge. Now their faces shifted. They rushed for the door, Damon fumbling with the lock before hauling Seraphina out first.
Not one of them glanced back at me.
Not one of them cared that I was lying in a pool of my own blood.
A few hours later, they came back.
The ambulance was long gone. The living room was empty but for a dark red stain drying on the floor tiles. On the coffee table sat a file folder and, beside it, a black Ring indoor security camera.
Damon walked over and reached for the document inside the folder, as if to make certain of something.
It was a hospital diagnostic report.
The color bled out of his face.
Printed there, in black and white, was the finding:
Sabine Fenwick. Intrauterine pregnancy, four weeks. Threatened miscarriage progressed to complete miscarriage.
Damon stared at the words, his fingers trembling.
Gideon leaned in. One glance was all he needed before his voice cracked with dread.
“She was pregnant? Then the blood on the floor was…”
