Too Late For Redemption Chapter 05
The doctor glanced in Mia’s direction, nodding while breaking out in a cold sweat.
“Yes, Mr. Carter. Ms. Evans’s mother had a bone marrow transplant and just saw Ms. Hall in the ward.”
Leo’s mind was put at ease, and he shot a cold glare at Luna.
“Are you done throwing this tantrum?”
The man picked up the ring, walked over to the base of the wall, and forced the ring back onto her ring finger despite Luna’s struggles.
“Luna, aren’t you just using Mom as an excuse to lie to me so you can get a divorce? We are never getting a divorce.”
“Whether it’s a divorce agreement or some other trick, don’t waste your breath.”
Taking advantage of the chaos, Mia slipped off her bracelet and threw it to the ground.
“Leo! The heirloom green jade bangle from the old master!”
Luna suddenly slammed her wrist viciously against the corner of the marble table!
A flash of white crossed Leo’s eyes, and his heart skipped a beat.
That was the white jade bangle her mother had given her when they got married. How could she bear to smash it?
The man’s heart rate spiked, blood rushing to his head.
“Luna!”
He forcefully stripped the jade bangle from Luna’s wrist and slipped it onto Mia’s.
Mia was incredibly smug, shaking her wrist in a provocative manner.
Leo glared down at the girl on the floor.
“You had people harass Mia, so it’s only right to compensate her with this bangle. Someone take my wife away! Before the grand show starts tomorrow night, you better stay at the Bellevue Special Sanatorium and learn some manners!”
Luna bit her tongue, warm blood seeping from the corner of her mouth.
“Leo, the biggest regret of my life is believing you and staying back then.”
The voice of the girl, who had just recovered from a severe illness, was very soft.
Yet it made the man feel a chilling cold pierce straight through his heart.
But when had Leo ever failed to get what he wanted?
He gritted his teeth, took Mia’s hand, and turned to leave.
For the next two days, Luna spent her time enduring brainwashing sessions and the electroshock chair at the sanatorium.
Her frail body would pass out from weakness, only to be jolted awake by the currents of the electroshock chair.
The flight scheduled to take off tonight was the only thing keeping her sane.
Before the grand show, Leo sent someone to pick her up. Luna used the excuse of a problem with her dress design to contact the venue, managing to get her hands on a phone.
She urgently dialed her best friend Nora Bell’s number.
“Nora, please help me check my marital status! Hurry!”
A loud gasp came from the other end of the line.
“Leo, how could this be… His registered wife is the heiress of the Kensington family, the target of the strategic marriage arranged by the Carters back then!”
The phone clattered to the ground.
Back then, Leo had refused the strategic marriage to the death, enduring 999 lashes from Arthur. Afterward, he immediately took her to a remote, cramped county clerk’s office, and they hastily got their marriage certificate without her having any time to prepare.
It turned out the entire Carter family had conspired to deceive her.
While she was still trying to please the Carter elders and learning to socialize with the upper class to become a good wife…
Her former brother, and later husband, Leo, had long since compromised with his family.
So they didn’t need her to get pregnant; the noble lady of the upper class would give birth to the Carter family’s heir. So they kept pushing women to Leo’s side—whether it was a canary or a secret Mrs. Carter, anyone was better than her.
Everyone knew she was just an outsider to the Carters, a mere passing traveler.
Only she didn’t know.
They were never even married, so what was there to divorce?
Luna laughed at how absurd she must have looked in Leo’s eyes, bringing up divorce multiple times during the month since she returned.
Regardless, she was finally free.
Taking advantage of the bodyguards stepping out to secure the area, Luna slipped into the driver’s seat, slammed on the gas, and sped toward the airport.
“Oh no, the madam escaped! Report this to Mr. Carter immediately!”
As Leo received the call and raced his car toward the airport, the car radio broadcasted an urgent news bulletin.
“At 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, a flight from the city to Seattle encountered severe turbulence shortly after takeoff and crashed. The exact casualties are still under investigation…”
