My Fiancé Lived With My Best Friend So I Left Chapter 08
After I was discharged, I rested for another half month in the safe house. Finally, I was able to report to the dock office.
On the first day, I went to the human resources department first.
The director looked exceptionally capable.
“This is the treatment our dock office provides for core members.”
“The safe house is very close to the dock office. It is a ten-minute walk.”
The key she handed me had a label attached to it with my name written on it.
Valentina Rossi.
In this city, I finally had a place to live that had nothing to do with Damian.
After finishing the procedures, HR took me to the twenty-seventh floor.
The glass doors opened. The people in the office area did not move at all; they were all focused on the matters in their hands.
HR took me to my seat and briefly introduced the department.
“Vincent Romano said that after you arrive, you should go to his office.”
“He’ll arrange your next assignments.”
I nodded and thanked her.
“All right.”
When I walked into Vincent’s office, he only lifted his eyes when he saw me.
“How is your body recovering?”
“I can handle normal duties.”
Vincent smiled.
“I asked about your body, not whether you were trying to be tough.”
He pushed a file toward me.
“This is your first cargo line after taking over.”
“It won’t be easy. You can go slowly, but the results cannot be poor.”
I took the file and flipped through it briefly.
“I understand.”
Before I left, Vincent called me back.
“On your first day, don’t rush into work. Get familiar with the environment first.”
“There will be plenty of time for you to handle cargo-line accounts later.”
It sounded like he had made a joke.
I tugged helplessly at the corner of my mouth.
After leaving his office, my phone rang.
It was a call from the front desk.
“Miss Rossi, there is a Mr. Lu downstairs looking for you.”
“He says he’s your fiance, but he has no appointment, so we cannot let him come up.”
I did not stop walking.
“I have nothing to do with him.”
“Understood.”
When I returned to my seat, the subordinates who had only had eyes for their work earlier all gathered around.
“Valentina, what did Vincent Romano say to you?”
“Is this cargo line still moving forward?”
After being busy all morning, I went downstairs at noon to pick up food.
But in the lobby, I saw Damian.
He was holding an insulated food container and looked as if he had been waiting downstairs for a long time.
The moment he saw me, he walked over.
“Valentina, you just took over and you’re already busy until now?”
“Is Vincent that eager to have you risk your life for him?”
I looked at the insulated container in his hand.
In the past, when my fever reached thirty-nine degrees Celsius, I called him more than a dozen times.
Either he did not answer, or he said Bianca was in a bad mood and he had to stay with her.
I went downstairs alone to buy medicine. I was so feverish I could barely stand and nearly collapsed at the pharmacy entrance.
Now, he had finally learned to bring porridge and medicine.
But I no longer needed it.
Damian’s eyes reddened.
He heard all of it.
“Valentina, I know I was wrong before. You were always the one coming to see me, and I got used to it. I took it for granted that you should come keep me company.”
“You were so busy with your duties, but if you ignored me for even a second, I would feel uneasy. I would be afraid.”
“So I kept confirming again and again whether you still loved me.”
“I’m sorry. I really know I was wrong.”
He wanted to hold my wrist.
I stepped back.
He did not come any closer.
“Valentina, you were willing to resign for me. You were willing to stay in this city for me.”
“Do you dare say you truly don’t love me at all anymore?”
