I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 33

Right in front of me was a metal sculpture, purely decorative. Crashing into it would be disastrous.

Just as I was about to collide, Spencer instantly released Cole. “Victoria!”

Without a second’s hesitation, he threw himself forward. Cushioned my fall.

I heard him let out a pained grunt.

I scrambled up to check on him. The crimson rapidly spreading from his neck made my pupils contract.

The sharp point of that decorative piece had stabbed into his throat.

Blood gushed out. Stained my vision red.

Instinctively, I pressed my hand to his wound. The warm, wet sensation on my palm made my heart stop.

For the first time in my life, I understood true helplessness. I just kept shouting, “Help.”

I’d been in similar situations before. Used to despise the people who just stood around screaming for help. Useless.

Now I knew. When a real catastrophe hits, the brain simply cannot function.

Not until Spencer was whisked away by the emergency ambulance did I find myself sitting outside the operating room. Still unable to process.

Beside me, Cole watched my unfocused, dazed eyes. His expression was incredibly complex.

He had never seen me look like that.

Even when he’d destroyed my professional reputation, I hadn’t lost my mind like this.

But for Spencer, I was this unhinged.

In that brief moment, he almost wished he was the one lying on the operating table.
