I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 09

These words made Cole’s eyes widen. He stared at Spencer, incredulity written all over his face.

Sabrina froze in place too.

I was equally shocked inside. My breath caught for a second.

In my head, Spencer would’ve either arrogantly commanded me not to divorce, or looked at me with disgust and called me unreasonable.

The last thing I expected was for him—always so willful and capricious with me—to put on such a pitiful display.

I flexed my hand, which was going numb in his crushing grip. Said with difficulty, “Let go, first.”

Spencer clutched my hand desperately. His voice was abnormally soft. “I won’t let go. Victoria, I was wrong. I didn’t tell you I was celebrating Blair’s birthday because I was afraid you’d get jealous and misunderstand. Can you forgive me?”

Those light, casual words sent a sharp, needle-like pain through my heart.

Scenes flashed before my eyes. Him and Blair, arm in arm at various high-society galas. Him and Blair, smiling silently, tacitly accepting the teasing of the crowd.

He said his relationship with Blair was just the bond of growing up together. That their families were close, so they maintained unavoidable social obligations.

He said if he actually liked Blair, where would I even fit in.

I’d heard these excuses so many times my ears could grow calluses.

I steeled my heart. Forcibly pried his fingers open. Lifted his arm, making him stand straight. “Spencer Prescott, you’re an adult. Can you act like one?”

“Save these words for the courtroom.”
