I Walked Away And He Fell Apart Chapter 11
The moment the call connected, Nathaniel’s voice came through, laced with a hint of eager anticipation. “Lilith? What do you want for lunch? I’ve stewed…”
His casual tone faded as I relayed the shocking news about Isabella. It was as if a switch had been flipped; his enthusiasm vanished, replaced by a heavy silence that hung between us.
I pressed on, reminding him that had he not insisted on rekindling his involvement with Isabella back then, she would never have had the opportunity to snag the bid details and betray the company so ruthlessly.
Even from my end of the line, I could vividly picture the ugly transformation of his expression, the way his brows furrowed in disbelief and anger.
Yet, despite the turmoil, Nathaniel made a promise, a shaky vow that he would take responsibility for the mess that had unfolded.
After we hung up, my screen lit up with a flurry of comments from the general chat, each one more dramatic than the last.
[Sis, he’s left the house!]
Look at him, he looks like he’s out for blood. He must be going to find that bitch Isabella!
[Dog eat dog!]
[Let them fight!]
It’d be best if they took each other out!
[Whatever happens between them, Sis, we only care about you.]
As I scrolled through the messages, I felt a sense of detachment from their excitement. Their battles were of no concern to me.
What mattered was that my moment had finally arrived.
With a surge of determination, I called for an emergency board meeting. As I stood before my colleagues, their eyes scrutinizing me, I took a deep breath and calmly declared my decision to resign.
The news spread like wildfire, igniting a frenzy of speculation. Nathaniel, still embroiled in his chaotic confrontation with Isabella, quickly caught wind of my decision and rushed to the office, his face a mask of confusion and urgency.
What awaited him, however, was the divorce agreement I had meticulously prepared long before.
“Why?” His voice trembled, a mix of disbelief and desperation. “I’ve already… I’ve already done as you said! I stayed at home, learned to do everything you wanted me to! Why are you still…?”
“I’m tired, Nathaniel.”
I let out a soft sigh, the fatigue of countless battles reflected in my gaze. “Isabella’s provocations have been relentless, and the company has suffered immensely because of your romantic entanglements. All you’ve left me with is a complete mess.”
I locked eyes with him, noticing the flicker of despair in his nearly broken expression. “You once said you couldn’t bear to lose me. But was it really me you couldn’t bear to lose, or just your scapegoat?”
Nathaniel’s eyes widened, the light within them dimming gradually until only a hollow despair remained.
In a sudden burst of resolve, he grabbed the pen, his grip tight and shaking, and signed his name at the bottom of the document.
The ink bled across the page, resembling a tear falling from a weary heart.
When he looked up, his bloodshot eyes held a final, humble plea. “Wait for me… once I’ve cleaned up all this mess, can I… pursue you again?”
I regarded him silently for a moment, feeling the weight of his words. Finally, I nodded softly, a mere “Mm” escaping my lips.
In an instant, the light flickered back to life in Nathaniel’s eyes, a glimmer of hope igniting within him.
But he was oblivious to the truth.
I had deceived him once more.
After our divorce, while Nathaniel busied himself with the aftermath of his choices, I took the opportunity to establish a new company.
I didn’t just walk away; I took with me the core team from Harrington Group and its invaluable network of contacts.
The first project I snatched under my new company’s banner was one of Nathaniel’s prized projects.
The chaos that ensued nearly drove him to the brink of insanity, yet he could do nothing but watch helplessly as I dismantled everything we had built together, along with all his subsequent efforts.
On the day I successfully poached the last project and the Harrington Group declared bankruptcy, I noticed a question in the general comments that caught my attention.
[Sis, didn’t you want to win Nathaniel back at the beginning?]
[Do you still want to win him back now?]
[Don’t talk nonsense, person above!]
Sis has finally found herself after so much trouble; don’t push her back into the fire!
I observed the lively debates unfolding in the general comments. What they failed to realize was that just three days after those comments appeared, I experienced a dream that shook me to my core.
In that dream, I truly leaped. After my untimely demise, Nathaniel finally recognized his love for me.
He mourned my death deeply, wallowing in sorrow for years.
But it wasn’t long before he found solace in the arms of someone who bore a striking resemblance to me.
After a whirlwind of love and drama, he and this lookalike ended up in a blissful relationship.
If it hadn’t been for those live comments that day—those twisted gestures of kindness that misled me—I would likely be nothing more than bones resting in a coffin now.
“I’m not taking him back!”
I thought of Nathaniel, still sending me desperate texts, pleading for another chance, and of the significant overseas project Mrs. Sheeran had mentioned. The general comments scrolled rapidly before my eyes, each filled with well-wishes for my future.
I couldn’t help but smile, my eyes crinkling with genuine happiness. Thank you, general comments, for helping me rediscover myself.
I owed my gratitude to them, and most importantly, to myself.
