I Walked Away And He Fell Apart Chapter 04
The general comments were my strongest shield. I could feel Nathaniel’s gaze constantly lingering on me, filled with scrutiny and a complex emotion I couldn’t quite decipher.
But I had no time to respond.
First, the general comments wouldn’t allow it. Second, I was genuinely busy.
On the night of the celebration banquet, as the project lead, I was naturally expected to attend with Nathaniel.
I changed into a champagne-colored fishtail gown that accentuated my slender figure. When I walked out, Nathaniel was leaning against the wall, waiting for me. The moment he saw me, his breath hitched, his eyes filled with undisguised astonishment.
A secret joy bloomed in my heart, but my face remained as cold as ice. I simply asked faintly, “Can we go now?”
His Adam’s apple bobbed. He silently stepped forward and opened the door for me.
Just as we were about to leave, a delicate voice piped up from the side.
“Nathaniel, Lilith, where are you going?”
Isabella appeared out of nowhere, holding a glass of deep purple juice. She stumbled and lunged straight at me!
The cold liquid splashed all over my champagne-colored dress, instantly blooming into a large, glaring stain.
“Ah! I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry, Lilith!” Isabella immediately shrieked in panic, tears welling up on cue. “I didn’t mean to… I slipped… What do we do? Tonight’s celebration is so important, and you don’t have a dress to wear. You can’t let Nathaniel go alone, can you…”
She apologized, but every word was a loaded suggestion.
Nathaniel was first stunned, then looked at my ruined dress, a flicker of hesitation crossing his face. He was silent for a few seconds, then actually spoke: “How about… Lilith Wallace, you go home and change first. We’re running out of time. I’ll take Isabella to the event?”
[Don’t agree! Absolutely not!]
[That bastard! He actually dared to say it! Can’t he see through this bitch’s tricks even now?!]
[Sister, if you obey, all your previous efforts will be wasted! He’ll immediately turn you back into that pathetic creature who comes when called and leaves when dismissed!]
I looked up at Nathaniel’s hesitant yet slightly entitled face and, without a second thought, swung my hand.
“Smack!”
A crisp slap echoed through the hall.
Nathaniel’s head was knocked to the side. He stared at me in disbelief.
“She’s clueless, but are you clueless too?” my voice was icy.
Then I turned to the still-acting Isabella. She covered her mouth, a triumphant glint in her eyes.
“Smack! Smack!”
I backhanded her twice more, slapping her into a daze on the floor.
