I Signed With The Wrong Husband Chapter 06
Sylvester held Miranda in his arms, gently brushing the thin sheen of sweat from her forehead with his fingertips.
It was their first time in the wilderness.
Driven by impulse and lust, he had lost himself completely, not noticing how late it had grown. After putting his suit back on, he suddenly remembered–Henrietta was still in the rose garden. He hurried back, but it was already dark. The garden lights had long been turned off. He scanned the area and saw no one there.
Yet he had specifically assigned someone to watch her.
“Syl, calm down. Maybe Hattie got tired of waiting and went home first,” Miranda offered softly.
But a strange, inexplicable panic began to coil in Sylvester’s chest.
Had Henrietta seen them?
Before the thought could fully form, he started looking around a few times.
Just then, he stomped on something.
He looked down, and his eyes fell on withered roses that lay trampled under his feet.
It was the 999 eternal roses he had planted for Henrietta.
A wave of dread washed over him. He crouched and clutched the petals, his knuckles turning white.
Miranda watched his desolate expression from the corner of her eye. A flicker of jealousy stirred within her, but she masked it with a gentle tone. “Syl, you know how Hattie’s been toward me lately. I’m sure she slipped away when your men weren’t looking.”
Her words eased him slightly.
He got into his Jeep and sped home.
When he pushed the door open, there was no one in the living room. Even Henrietta’s usual soft- soled slippers were gone from the entryway.
He searched every room, unable to shake off the feeling that something was missing..
Miranda followed closely. Noticing his grim expression, she wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. “Don’t worry, Syl.”
For the first time, he pushed her away roughly, his voice icy. “Don’t touch me.
As he continued searching, she bit her lip and said, “Maybe she’s out drinking with men again.
“It seems she won’t be satisfied until she drives me away.”
That same unease seized Sylvester again.
“I’ll stay with her the next few days,” he said coldly. “Don’t let her see you.”
Miranda clenched her fists, carefully schooling her expression.
He put on his coat and checked the bars Henrietta often visited.
But before he headed out, the doorbell rang.
“Hattie’s back!”
He rushed to the door–but it wasn’t her. Two police officers stood outside.
“How can I help you?” he asked, his heart pounding harder with every second. He had never been this uneasy before.
One of the officers showed him a screenshot from the scenic area’s security camera.
“We received a report of a body wearing the same clothes as this woman. Can you tell us your relationship with her?”
Sylvester stared at the familiar coat in the photo. His mind went blank, his face turning deathly pale.
