I said it calmly, but my mother’s face twisted with rage. She jabbed a finger at me, her hand shaking. “What kind of attitude is that? We raised you for twenty-five years, and this is how you repay us?”
Repay them?
I let out a short, sharp laugh, though my eyes stung.
“When I won the state art award in eleventh grade, where were you? Oh, that’s right — you were at Marguerite’s party, celebrating her acceptance to Brown. The whole family was there. Not one person even remembered I’d won.”
“In my entire closet, which single piece of clothing was ever bought just for me? Every last one was a Marguerite hand-me-down. Did you know the kids at school called me ‘Marguerite’s shadow’?”
I turned from her to my father, who still stood silent, and my voice went cold. “I tried. God, I tried so hard to make you see me. But I understand now. In your eyes, Marguerite is your only daughter. So fine. Just pretend you never had one like me.”
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then, after a long silence, a look of genuine confusion crossed my mother’s face — confusion, and a kind of chilling, matter-of-fact certainty.
She regarded me coldly. “Isn’t it normal for the better child to get more attention? Marguerite is simply better than you. That’s a fact.”
With that one sentence, the last of my illusions shattered.
It wasn’t that I hadn’t done enough.
It was that, from the very start, I had never been enough.
I drew a deep breath, turned away from her, and faced Cormac.
“You think that, too, don’t you?”
He instinctively dodged my gaze, hurrying to explain. “Sadie, I searched everywhere for you, I —”
“I’m asking you,” I cut in, staring at him, my voice dangerously quiet. “Do you also believe that because I’m not as good as my sister, I should be grateful to get her leftovers?”
