The air in the courtyard went still.
Cormac’s gaze jumped from the silver bookmark to Aidan, then back to me. Behind him, my parents looked ready to detonate.
“Sadie Whitaker!” my mother spoke first, her voice climbing high and shrill. “You vanished on your wedding day and turned the whole Whitaker family into a laughingstock across the North Shore!”
Cormac took a step forward, his eyes locking onto Aidan with cold possession. “Who is he?”
My mother gave me no chance to answer. Her contemptuous stare dragged over me. “I knew it! There was someone else the whole time? Fine — you were never as sharp as your sister, but I never guessed your character was this rotten, too.”
Meeting her hostile glare, Aidan tightened his hold on Sam’s hand and said to me, low and calm, “I’ll take Sam to the backyard. Call me if you need anything.”
His quiet dignity drew a line in the dust, setting me apart from their hysteria.
“You’re coming back with me,” Cormac said. It wasn’t a request; it was a command. “Why did you leave without a word?”
I looked at him, and the sight was almost laughable. “Cormac,” I said quietly, “we’re over.”
“Over?” The word seemed to set his rage alight. He seized my wrist. “What, you’re done with your parents, too?”
I shook his hand loose and looked straight into his stunned, furious eyes.
“Cormac, the one who never wanted me… was you.”
