I took care of business in record time because all I wanted was to get back to my mate. From my office window on the third floor, I saw her crossing the inner training grounds toward the back of the packhouse. Even at that distance, the sight of her filled me with pride.
But then I saw Four young women cut across the grass to intercept her, the one leading them was Harper, Clarisse’s best friend. She was nothing but trouble and had even helped Clarisse spread rumors about me and also destabilized pack activities.
I would have banished her from the pack alongside Clarisse, but I kept her on because she was a strong fighter and because I didn’t have the kind of evidence that would justify an expulsion. Clarisse must have told Harper that Selene was coming, which was why she was looking to settle the score on Clarisse’s behalf.
The four women surrounded Selene and two of them grabbed both her arms from behind. The moment I saw this I sent a mind link to Truett.
I need you to come to the eastside of the manor, near the training grounds, I think Selene’s in trouble.
Say no more, I’m on my way Truett responded sharply.
I didn’t wait another second. I left the window, took the stairs two at a time, and cut through the service corridor to the back doors. Truett and Lyra had beaten me there; they were tucked in along the hedge line, close enough to listen. Truett shot me a quick glance and tilted his chin toward the scene. I nodded and moved in beside him. None of the four girls had noticed us. Their attention was welded to Selene.
“.so you’re the reason he broke his promise,” Harper was saying, her mouth curved in a smug line. “We all know a witch can make a man do anything if she’s desperate enough.”
Selene didn’t flinch. If anything, her breathing grew steadier. The bond let me feel it: her heart rate sat in a calm state. It was the opposite of fear. It made me feel good knowing my mate wasn’t scared of confrontation. But I still felt rage coursing through my veins at the fact that they had even dared to confront her.
“How can you even believe a word from Clarisse’s mouth,” Selene said, “You know her character is nothing home to write home about. I mean you saw her get banished from her pack, so how could that have been my fault.
Harper’s smile cracked. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You will believe whatever keeps you afloat,” Selene said. “I can’t fault you for that, But be sure to leave me out of it. I am not a witch. And if you’re thinking of taking a swing at your Luna, remember that there are consequences for
such actions.”
Harper laughed and brandished the knife again, “Consequences only apply when you get caught.”

Selene smiled and turned to the hedge where I was hiding, our eyes met and she turned back to Harper “Well it’s a good thing your Alpha is here to see everything.”
I take that as my cue and step out from behind the hedge. The two girls holding Selene’s arms immediately become frightened and let go of her, they run and hide behind Harper.
Harper, however, was adamant, she had made up her mind and was intent on finishing her goal. In a burst of speed she charges at Selene and raises the knife to stab her. The world goes into slow motion and I see the blade glint in the air.
I’m about to dash forward when Selene casually ducks under the first Slash and sends Harper flying with a kick to the chest. She rolls a few feet before coming to a halt on the lawn.
Truett steps up beside me and whistles “Your mate’s got a real mean kick”
I can’t help but smile at that. But I quickly turned my attention back to Harper. Who was now crawling towards the knife that had fallen to the ground.
She had almost reached it when Lyra’s foot came down on the hilt of the blade. “Don’t even think about it, worm” Lyra said in a menacing tone.
Harper’s gaze flicked between Lyra’s shoes and Selene’s calm stance. She crawls away from the blade and pulls her- self to a kneeling position.
“You know I hate people that always seem to have an issue with who other people get to be mates with, it’s a disgust- ing mentality and frankly it’s a bit cringe.’ Lyra said sternly.
Harper dragged herself back to her feet, she was still out of breath from Selene’s kick. But she forced herself to speak.
“I didn’t do it for me” She pointed at Selene “She’s a witch, she’s put a spell on my Alpha, Clarisse told me.”
“That’s enough Harper!” I said finally.
She went quiet and I stepped into her space and pointed a finger right at her face. “I heard everything you said, you weren;’t doing any of this for me, you were doing this because you thought you would get either truett of my brother as a reward. If that’s not sick and diabolical I don’t know what is.”
Harper’s nostrils flared. “I swear that’s not the reason.”
“Don’t bother” I said cutting her off “You let your jealousy rule your judgment and now you will face the conse- quences”
One of the girls spoke up “Please Alpha, we had no hand in this, Haepr was the one who convinced us..”
But I glared at her and she quickly went mute. There would be no pardons, I made a vow that anyone who threatened my mate would not go scott free and I intended to keep it.
“Harper,” I said, turning fully to her. “You have proven you can’t be trusted around my mate. You brought accom- plices to corner and harm your Luna. You lied to yourself and to them. And because of that.” I let my voice go flat. “You can’t stay here.”
Shock cracked across her face. “You’re expelling me?”
“You and your accomplices,” I said. “You have one hour. Pack your things and be gone.”
I lifted a hand and signaled toward the path. Eight soldiers jogged in on cue. They fanned out and stopped in a line at my back, then split to surround the four women at a respectful distance.
“Escort them to their rooms,” I told the lead. “Give them sixty minutes. They leave my border by the end of that hour. If their families choose to go with them, that’s their choice. There will be no penalty for the families if they stay.”
“Yes, Alpha.” The lead stepped forward, and tried to grab Harper but she shook his grip off and rushed to me. “Please Logan, you know me, you can’t do this, please reconsider, I beg you”
Her pleas fell on deaf ears and I simply nodded to my soldiers. Two men stepped forward and grabbed Harper by her arms. She kicked and screamed for them to let go of her, but neither paid her any heed.
Once Harper was dragged away Silence settled over the lawn. I walked over to Selene and looked her over “Are you hurt? Did they cut you?”
Harper and her cohorts weren’t slouches so it was possible they had hurt her before I got here.
She shook her head. “No. I’m fine Logan.” Then she held my hand “You got here just in time.”
I pulled her into a hug and pressed my forehead gently against hers. I was still enraged over what happened a few mo- ments ago so I decided to address the matter at the Pack meeting we had scheduled for later that evening. But the set time was too far away, I needed this settled as soon as possible.
I pulled away slightly from Selene and turned to Truett. “Spread the word, the mandatory pack meeting will be held by 2pm.”
