A Love That Never Existed Chapter 44

It felt as if he had been pulled back five years.

Back to when he had been gravely ill, and forced into marriage.

He saw Yvosha standing beside his bed, telling him, “As long as I’m here, you’ll be fine.”

He tried to lift himself up.

“Yvosha…”

She walked over, a cup of warm water in her hand, and carefully helped him drink.

“Damiel, have some water.”

He drank in the warmth in greedy little sips – a phantom sensation – and slowly his eyes turned red.

“You left.”

Yvosha set the cup down and drew the blanket up to his chin.

“I love you so much. How could I ever leave you?”

Damiel shook his head.

“You’re lying. You never loved me. None of it was real…”

“How can you say that?” She bent close and gently wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. “I’ve always loved you.”

Damiel gathered the last of his strength to raise his hand, reaching for her face.

“Yvosha, I’m sorry… If there’s a next life…”

His fingers curled around nothing in the air.

Then his hand dropped, heavy and final.

The heart monitor flatlined.

A single shrill tone filled the quiet room.
