Not long afterward, Damiel was moved into the highest-level intensive care unit.
In under a month he had wasted away, his features sharp and sunken.
He was barely a shadow of the man he had been.
He turned away every visitor.
He wouldn’t even let Cordella in.
The only thing kept at his bedside was a tablet.
It was tuned to a live feed of any news that mentioned Yvosha.
Damiel watched it every day.
Later, when he became too weak to lift his hand, he had his assistant read the headlines aloud.
Whether she had loved him or not, he could not bring himself to let her go.
In time, Damiel spent more of his hours asleep than awake.
Until one late night.
He came awake all at once.
For a moment he felt a clarity he hadn’t experienced in months.
His body even felt strangely light, almost strong.
But he knew exactly what it was.
It wasn’t recovery.
It was the last surge before the end.
He lifted his hand and pressed the call button.
His assistant pushed the door open at once.
When the assistant saw Damiel sitting up on his own, his eyes immediately reddened.
“Sir…”
Damiel’s voice was a quiet rasp.
“Get the lawyer. And bring the document from the safe.”
The assistant nodded, choking down a sob, and hurried out.
Half an hour later, the lawyer and the assistant came back in together.
Damiel leaned against the headboard, took the pen and the document, and signed his name at the bottom of the will.
“All of my private assets – my shares in the Vorretti Group, my properties, my funds…”
He paused, dragging in a breath.
“Donate all of it to establish a leukemia relief foundation. Name it after Petra.”
Once that was done, he seemed to have spent the last of his strength.
He closed his eyes.
“You can go now.”
The lawyer and the assistant exchanged a quick glance, then quietly slipped out of the room.
The ward fell silent again.
Damiel’s breathing went shallow.
His consciousness began to drift away.
