Anthony did not understand why he asked that.
Genevieve continued speaking. “If you like me, why have you never taken the initiative to buy me a birthday gift?
If you like me, why are you unwilling to travel with me?
If you like me, why did you let another woman become pregnant with your child, and even take wedding photos with her?
My heart is flesh and blood, I can feel pain too. If this is your so-called love, I’m sorry, I don’t want it.”
With every sentence Genevieve spoke, Anthony’s face grew paler.
Memories from the past flooded into his mind. He wanted to refute Genevieve’s words, but after searching through all his memories, he found that everything was just as she said.
One by one, every event was something he had actually done, and he simply could not argue back.
In the end, Anthony could only grasp at the issue of Dorothy and stammered. “My kindness to Dorothy was only because I mistook her for someone else. If I had known it was you from the start, I wouldn’t have…”
“Enough!” Genevieve interrupted Anthony. Did he really think the biggest problem between them was caused by Dorothy’s presence? It seemed that even after two years, he still had not figured out what their greatest issue truly was.
“Even without Dorothy, there would have been someone else. Taking a step back, even if she really was your savior, there are so many ways to repay kindness. Why did you insist on doing everything yourself? You can’t let go now simply because I chased you for twenty years. After I leave, you just can’t accept it. Don’t look for me anymore. Let’s part ways peacefully.”
After saying this, Genevieve invited him out of her home.
Anthony returned to his own house in a daze. Was it really just unwillingness to accept? He did not know. But scenes of being together with Genevieve unconsciously surfaced in his mind.
When Anthony asked if she was willing to be with him, Genevieve’s face instantly turned red, and she stammered, asking if he had lost a dare. Only after Anthony repeatedly confirmed did her face finally show a happy expression, but as if afraid he would notice, she secretly made a victory gesture when he wasn’t looking.
From that moment on, their five years of living together day and night began. During those five years, he could feel all the kindness Genevieve showed him. He had never thought about breaking up with her. The moment he agreed to her proposal, he truly wanted to spend his life with her.
But today, he finally learned from Genevieve’s words. For five years, he had never taken the initiative, nor had he ever expressed his love to her. Genevieve had struggled for five years in a relationship supported only by her own feelings. Later on, he even devoted all his attention to another man, ignoring the pain and torment Genevieve suffered. How could he have the face to ask for her forgiveness now?
After Genevieve made everything clear to Anthony, she felt much more at ease. That night, she slept soundly.
The next morning, she got up early to pick up the reserved rings and jewelry. Because they only had a two-month holiday, they planned to go on a round-the-world trip for a month as their honeymoon after the wedding. Therefore, the wedding date was set rather hastily. Fortunately, both families fully supported them, so all they needed to prepare were the wedding dress and rings, and only the two of them had to show up on the wedding day.
She and Derek had already reserved the ring style, so they could just pick it up at the store and leave.
After leaving the store, Genevieve was still carefully admiring the ring and gold bracelet on the road, holding them up to the sunlight to observe, secretly thinking how beautiful they would look on her. She did not notice that the two men who had been leaning by the roadside exchanged glances and quietly followed behind her.
When she reached the corner, a dark figure suddenly darted out, snatched the bag from Genevieve’s hand, and ran off. Genevieve instinctively tried to chase after him, but behind her came the sound of a knife piercing into her body.
