The Moment I Let You Go Chapter 08

“It’s so frustrating, but I can’t calm him down.

Just being around me only makes him more aggressive.

“I couldn’t stand the thought of admitting defeat to you, so I kept him locked in a cage every day and pumped him full of heavy suppressants.

“Last night, he broke out and took a bad fall down the stairs.

“I never meant for my own selfishness to put his life at risk.

“Could you please just go see him?”

When I didn’t say anything, her voice dropped to a desperate plea.

“Just as a doctor.

Please?”

I glanced over at Daniel.

“You know I have a new werebeast now,” I told her.

“Going to see Killian wouldn’t be fair to him.”

“I really don’t mind, Ms. Lexington.”

Daniel’s quick agreement caught me off guard.

He actually seemed more eager to visit Killian than I was.

He even made us stop when we passed a fruit stand on the way.

Blinking at me, he said, “We shouldn’t show up empty-handed,” and earnestly started picking out oranges.

It frustrated me a little bit.

Sometimes, Daniel was just way too accommodating.

When we got to the hospital, Daniel handed me the bag of oranges and politely waited out in the hall.

Killian had messed up his leg in the fall.

He was staring out the window, completely lost in thought, but turned his head when he heard me walk in.

His golden eyes went wide with unmistakable excitement for a split second before his brow furrowed.

“Why are you here?

I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”

I set the oranges down on the bedside table.

“Since you’re clearly fine, I’m just going to leave.”

“Adelyn, you’re doing this on purpose,” he complained, his voice thick with grievance.

“You came all this way to see me just to act cold.”

Despite his attitude, he immediately started rummaging through the fruit I’d brought.

A second later, he froze.

He shoved the bag hard, sending it crashing to the floor.

“These smell exactly like that fake merman.

How the hell do you expect me to eat them?”

I crouched down and started picking up the oranges, one by one.

“Then don’t eat them,” I said.

“Killian, you’ve just never learned to respect the effort other people put in for you.”

I turned for the door.

Killian grabbed me from behind, holding on tight.

The words spilled out of him in a desperate rush.

“Don’t go.

Please don’t go.

“I’ve felt awful ever since you left.

“At first, I thought it was just the physical pain from the rut, but seeing you with that lowly merman… it just made me so angry and miserable!”

He grabbed one of the oranges, haphazardly peeled it, and started shoving the wedges into his mouth.

The fruit was underripe and sour.

He choked and gagged on the bitter taste but forced himself to keep swallowing.

“You said I don’t respect people’s efforts.

I’ll start learning right now, okay?

“Just don’t go, Ada.”

It was incredibly rare for him to call me Ada.

But it was too late.

I felt a dull ache of sadness in my chest, but it was only out of pity for my past self – the person who used to cry in secret because Killian refused to acknowledge me as his owner.

I pushed his arms away.

“You chose Nadia.

Focus on your life with her.

“Stop ruining your own.”

The push sent Killian stumbling backward onto the hospital bed.

Looking pale and totally exhausted, he asked, “Are you saying this because you want to start over with that lowly merman?

“Do you honestly think he’s a good person?”

I walked out and shut the door behind me, completely blocking out Killian’s angry shouting.

Daniel walked over and took my hand.

We rode back in total silence.

When we finally got home, he suddenly asked, “Ms. Lexington, if you ever found out that I kept a very serious secret from you, would you forgive me?”

Taking in his anxious expression, I threw out a guess.

“Are you secretly a werebeast from some wealthy family who ran away after a fight, and now you have to go back?”

“No…”

He looked completely at a loss for words, his mouth opening and closing a few times without making a sound.

I slowly slipped my fingers from his grasp, one by one.

“If you really kept a serious secret from me,” I told him calmly, “then our relationship would be over.”
