My Ex-Husband Wanted Me Back Chapter 02

But I didn’t get to leave.

Because Shauna started crying again.

Clutching her chest, she said, “Dina, I know. You still love Fred. You’re jealous that he’s so good to me.

“If you hate having me around that much, fine—I’ll book a flight and leave the country right now. Just… Please don’t say things like moving out again. It was the anger talking, I get that.”

Her eyes fluttered shut before she could finish, and she collapsed into Winfred’s arms.

Our dad, Desmond Harmon, walked through the door at the exact moment.

“You damn girl! You picked on Shauny again?”

He hurled the cake he was carrying straight at me, then slapped me across the face.

The crack of impact rang through the air. My cheek went numb.

Dad and Mom looked at me like I was their worst enemy.

Dad snatched my ID and phone away. “You’re not going anywhere. Get outside in the courtyard.

“You’re not to move until Shauny wakes up.”

With Shauna in his arms, Winfred rushed toward the hospital.

As he passed me, he said, disappointment heavy in his voice, “Geraldine, Shauny’s hand is badly hurt. She’s fragile. You really shouldn’t have gotten under her skin.

“Go outside and think about what you’ve done.”

My parents and the man I loved all rushed to the hospital with Shauna, worried sick.

And me? I was left standing in the courtyard, with servants watching to make sure I didn’t move.

I stood for an entire day. They wouldn’t let me in, even when the rain started pouring. I ended up having a high fever and passing out.

While I drifted in and out of consciousness, I felt a warm towel on my face.

I struggled to open my eyes and saw Winfred.

He’d come back at some point. He lifted me onto the bed, fetched water, and fed me medicine.

He was actually taking care of me—probably the first time he ever had.

Our eyes met, and I saw something complicated in his gaze. Whether it was pity or charity, I couldn’t tell.

“Don’t be hard on Shauny anymore. She’s been through a lot since her hand was broken. That’s why she depends on me so much.

“I take care of her as a friend. After she recovers, let’s get married again.

“I’m sure you’ve learned your lesson this time. From now on, just be a little more understanding. Let her have her way. Alright?”

I looked at him, finding his words utterly ridiculous.

After everything that happened today, he still couldn’t see?

Everyone favored Shauna. If she ever wanted something, all she had to do was shed a few tears. She didn’t even need to try.

Three years ago, she put on a sad face and refused to get married. So our parents went along with the Logan family’s demand and made me marry Winfred instead—without so much as blaming her.

For the past three years, I’d been the perfect wife, going along with everything Winfred wanted.

He said he didn’t want children for now, so I took the pill every time.

He said a wife should stay home and be sociable. So I quit my job, pushed my way into that insufferable circle of rich women, and smiled through every bit of their disdain.

With his stomach issues, I was always on standby. No matter how late he came home, there was always warm soup waiting.

I’d already thrown my pride away.

Then two months ago, Shauna broke her wrist. She called in the middle of the night, sobbing that she’d never play the piano again, saying she wanted to die.

Winfred bolted out the door, not even pausing to grab his shoes. He brought her back to the country and took meticulous care of her from then on.

No one seemed to give a damn about how I felt. No matter how unfairly I was treated, it just didn’t matter.

Feeling my strength drain away, I closed my eyes, not bothering to argue with him.

Soon, the medicine kicked in, and I drifted off. I didn’t even know when he left.

I was jolted awake when Dad yanked me off the bed.

Mom grabbed my hair and yelled, “You’re divorced, and you still tried to steal Fred away from Shauny?

“Because you asked him to come back and take care of you, she tried to kill herself! She almost died!

“You’re perfectly healthy. Why do you have to compete with her? She’s been through enough—her hand’s broken!”

Biting back the searing pain, I forced out the words, my voice dry and cracked. “I was drenched in the rain in the yard. I had a fever and passed out.

“I didn’t know Winfred came back.

“You took my phone, remember? How was I supposed to call him?”

But they dragged me out the door, paying no attention to what I said.

“Shauny almost died, and you were still sleeping?

“You’re going to the hospital to swear in her face that you’ll never go near Fred again.”

They dragged me all the way to Shauna’s hospital room. I didn’t even have the strength to struggle.

The fancy VIP suite was decorated all festively—like a wedding room.

Shauna was nestled in Winfred’s arms, crying pitifully. “My hand’s ruined. I have no reason to live anymore. If you don’t want me, I might as well be dead.”

He comforted her softly, “Silly, what are you talking about? Of course, I want you.

“When your hand heals, we’ll get married.”
