Love Fades With Bygone Days Chapter 06
Esme’s blank, empty face.
The fresh cuts on her hand.
The red handprint blooming on her cheek.
And the necklace Alessia herself had crushed under her heel.
It was a gift Esme had bought for her with her very first internship paycheck.
A four-leaf clover necklace from Tiffany’s.
To get the one Alessia had fallen in love with, Esme had blown her budget, spending more than three thousand dollars.
Her paycheck hadn’t been enough, so she’d dipped into her savings.
That day, Alessia had dragged Esme back to the store, her eyes red, insisting she return it.
But Esme had just squeezed her hand and said one thing.
“You deserve it.”
“Thank you for always being there for me.”
Alessia had hugged her and cried for what felt like an hour.
From that day on, she had worn the necklace constantly.
For years, she had never taken it off.
Until today, when she had ground it into pieces.
When the car stopped in front of their building, Alessia got out without a word.
She didn’t wait for Leo like she usually did, and she didn’t look back at Tomas.
She hurried upstairs, went straight into the bedroom, and shut the door.
The moment it clicked shut, she finally broke down.
“Esme, I’m so sorry.”
“I’m sorry, please, just pick up.”
Alessia sank to the floor, her hands shaking as she dialed my number again and again.
She had once set my number as her emergency contact.
No matter how late, if she called, I would answer.
This time, the phone just rang.
She refused to give up, calling again.
Still nothing.
“Please, just answer one time,” she whispered between sobs.
“I was wrong. I was so, so wrong…”
She cried until she could barely breathe.
