I Was His Substitute Bride Chapter 35

Dead silence on the other end of the line.

Sabrina’s voice trembled. “Cole…”

“Sabrina, we’re done. If you hadn’t cried and begged me before, saying your parents were pushing you to marry, that as soon as we got back they’d force you into an arranged marriage with some farmer back home, I would never have agreed to the engagement. I finally understand. What I felt for you was never romantic love. I only ever saw you as a little sister. I’ll do my best to communicate with your parents. But I will absolutely not marry you.”

Cole’s voice was uncharacteristically cold. Zero room for negotiation.

Sabrina’s mind went into a tailspin.

She knew Cole’s personality too well. Once he made a decision, he never looked back. If he was suggesting a breakup, there was truly no hope of reconciliation.

At this thought, her heart turned to ice.

Back then, to avoid being eliminated from the firm, she’d had to plead and persuade Cole to make a move against Victoria. She’d stolen Victoria’s high-profile, nationally sensational case. Became famous overnight.

Later, using that very case, she’d gained an opportunity for advanced training in London.

For three years abroad, she’d never even considered trying. Cole took care of her like a child. The cases were his. The briefs were written by him. Even every single word uttered in court, every strategy, was taught to her by Cole, word by word.

She never saw anything wrong with it. Just assumed it was the power of her charm. That she’d already locked Cole down. Kept enjoying the fruits of unearned success.

If she really lost Cole, her downfall would be spectacular.
