I Walked Away And He Fell Apart Chapter 08

In that fleeting moment, the cacophony of voices that had filled the air just seconds before evaporated as if they had never existed at all.

A profound stillness enveloped us, thick and heavy, as if the world had pressed pause, leaving only Nathaniel and me suspended in this charged silence.

His eyes, wide with a blend of desperation and determination, bore into mine. “Tell me,” he urged, taking an eager step closer, “what can I do to make things right? What will it take for you to return to the person you once were?”

As I gazed at him, a spark of inspiration ignited within me, illuminating a path I hadn’t previously considered.

“It’s quite simple, really,” I began, my voice deliberate and measured, savoring the weight of my words. “You need to put yourself in my shoes.”

His expression froze, confusion knitting his brows together as he struggled to grasp the depth of my suggestion.

I continued, each word carefully articulated, “From this moment on, you will stay home and manage the household. Every evening, when I return from work, I expect dinner to be waiting for me. I will attend the office, mingle at social gatherings, and share laughter and conversation with other men. You are not to question me, nor interfere in any way. Your only task is to wait for me, gentle and considerate, just as I used to be.”

“That’s impossible!” he exclaimed, the instinctive protest bursting forth before he could temper it. His brow furrowed deeply, and his expression morphed into one of fierce resistance, as if my words were an affront to his very being.

I sighed, shaking my head with a mix of disappointment and resignation.

“See? You’re not being sincere at all,” I replied, my voice laced with a hint of frustration.

Having said my piece, I turned away from him, my feet carrying me toward the closet, where I intended to gather my things.

Nathaniel, sensing the gravity of the moment, rushed after me, his urgency palpable. As I reached for a suitcase, he seized my wrist with a grip that was both tight and pleading. “What are you doing? Are you really leaving?”

His voice trembled, a clear indication of the turmoil churning within him.

“But… even when I brought Isabella home last time, you never thought about leaving…” His words tumbled out, steeped in confusion and a hint of panic, his vulnerability almost heart-wrenching.

I gently but firmly pulled my hand free, the motion imbued with a quiet resolve.

In front of him, I opened the suitcase deliberately, each action calculated as I began to pack a few changes of clothes, the fabric folding neatly under my hands.

“You’re overthinking this,” I said, my gaze fixed on the task at hand, avoiding his penetrating stare. “Mrs. Sheeran has invited me to an island getaway for a few days. It’s just what I need to unwind.”

I folded a long, flowing silk dress, its fabric shimmering softly in the light, before finally meeting his eyes, my expression open and sincere.

“Darling, during my absence, you should take some time to reflect on everything,” I added, my tone deceptively casual.

The truth, however, was far from what I had just articulated.

There was no trip to an island with Mrs. Sheeran; that was merely a façade.

What I truly sought was a break—a chance to escape, to find myself again.

Once I landed, the first thing I did was reach out to Mrs. Sheeran, my voice earnest as I asked her to cover for me during my absence. Her laughter rang through the phone, warm and inviting, as she readily agreed to my request.

And so began my two-week journey around the globe.

From the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris to the stunning blue-domed churches of Santorini, my phone became a repository of breathtaking scenery, while my contact list swelled with numbers from charming men I encountered along the way.

As I strolled out of the airport, clad in stylish attire and donning a pair of chic sunglasses, a sudden “ding” echoed in my mind.

The general comments that had been silent for two weeks had finally returned, buzzing in my consciousness like a swarm of bees, ready to fill the void that had accompanied my escape.
