His Regret Can’t Bring Us Back Chapter 05

Sebastian walked in with a lunchbox and found the room in complete chaos.

Nicole’s face was pale, and the bandages wrapped around her body were stained with some unknown red liquid.

Anastasia was on the floor, looking terrified.

“What are you two doing?” he asked with a frown.

“Captain Crawford, I heard Ms. Bradford was hurt, so I brought some homemade tomato sauce to visit her. I didn’t expect her to throw the lunch box and hit me. She told me to get out…”

Anastasia pressed her lips together, her eyes filled with wounded sadness.

“Nicole!” Sebastian’s voice turned cold. “There’s a limit to throwing a tantrum. You abandoned your work at the unit, and now you’re attacking the family of a fallen officer. How did you become like this?”

Nicole looked at the warning and disappointment in his eyes, and a deep exhaustion swallowed her whole.

She tugged weakly at the corner of her mouth. “You think…this is tomato sauce?”

Sebastian narrowed his eyes, as if he had also caught something strange in the smell.

But then Anastasia said, “My chest hurts so much. If Eunice were still alive, she’d believe me.”

And just like that, every trace of his suspicion disappeared.

Sebastian gave Nicole a cold look. “What else could it be? I’ll deal with Anastasia first. You need to seriously reflect on what you’ve done!”

He helped Anastasia up and hurried off to find a doctor.

Nicole was left alone in the ward.

Numbly, she looked away and pressed the call button, enduring the pain tearing through her body.

The medical staff rushed in, and their faces went pale when they saw the hot pepper sauce seeping into her open wounds. “Treat this immediately! Otherwise, the wounds could become badly infected!

“Miss, you need to call your family over right away. This is serious!”

Nicole lay on the bed and closed her eyes in exhaustion.

“I don’t have any family.”

No one knew about her relationship with Sebastian.

And soon, they wouldn’t have any relationship at all.

On the day Nicole was discharged, she completed the paperwork alone.

At the same time, she received a notice from the courthouse. “Ms. Bradford, your divorce application has been approved. You can come collect your divorce certificate.”

She took a deep breath. “Okay, thank you.”

When she walked out of the hospital entrance, Sebastian happened to arrive.

Without a word, Sebastian grabbed her wrist. “Come on. Our unit needs your cooperation on something.”

Nicole was still weak. He pulled her so hard that she stumbled, and her wounds split open again.

As they walked, Sebastian briefed her on the case. “The gang member who took Anastasia has resurfaced. The investigation team needs a sketch so we can set up a proper search perimeter. You saw their faces, so you’ll work with the forensic artist.”

She looked up and met his cold, composed eyes.

In them, she saw urgency for the case and determination to catch the gang. The only thing missing was concern for her.

She thought of that winter in their old brick house, when the two of them huddled together for warmth.

She remembered the time he took a knife for her and nearly died saving her, and the day she almost lost her life giving birth to Duncan.

They had stood at the City Hall and promised to stand by each other, through every hardship and every ordinary day, for the rest of their lives.

“What is it?” he asked with a frown.

“Nothing.” She smiled faintly and walked ahead of him.

“Sebastian, this is the last time I’ll help you,” Nicole thought.

When one was young, one thought promises made in love could survive anything.

In the end, they were only a dream that died without a sound.

At the criminal investigation unit, Nicole sat in a chair across from a professional forensic artist.

“Ms. Bradford, you can start describing the details now.”

The brutal, humiliating memories surged back.

Her fingers curled slightly, and she looked toward Sebastian, who was sitting in on the session. “Captain Crawford, could you please step out?”

Sebastian looked surprised, but he still stood and left.

After the door closed, she took a deep breath. “We can start.”

In the empty interview room, only her slightly hoarse voice and the soft scratch of the pencil remained.

Half an hour later, the forensic artist looked up with red eyes, her lips trembling with shock. “Nikki, why didn’t you tell Captain Crawford about any of this? And that child…”

Nicole shook her head. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”

No one would care.

And she no longer expected anyone to.

After leaving the criminal investigation unit, she headed toward the courthouse.

But just as she was one step away from entering, a man suddenly bumped into her.

A strange scent rushed into her nose.

Nicole inhaled before she could react. Her body swayed, and she passed out.
