I went back to my room, shutting the door on the eager chatter about converting my wedding into an investor conference.
I opened my closet and packed a few changes of clothes and a small toolkit, tucking them into the corner of my suitcase.
Downstairs, the volume on the television suddenly spiked. The family had gathered to watch the live announcement of the Chicago Young Physicians Award. Marguerite was a finalist.
“First place! It’s Marguerite!”
A roar of celebration erupted from the living room.
Through the flood of congratulations, I caught Marguerite’s voice, tinted with practiced regret. “The award ceremony is tomorrow morning… what a shame it conflicts with Sadie’s wedding. None of you will be able to come with me.”
The living room went quiet for a beat.
Then Cormac’s voice rang out, firm and clear. “You won’t be going alone.”
A few minutes later, there was a knock on my door.
Cormac came in, a look of gentle certainty on his face. “Sadie, let’s talk,” he began. “Marguerite’s award ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We can’t let her go alone. Can we move our wedding ceremony to the evening?”
Once in a lifetime? I thought, a cold laugh catching in my throat. And how many times was I supposed to get married in this lifetime?
The housekeeper, who had trailed him to the door, started to object. “But changing the time will be such a hassle —”
“Enough!” my mother snapped, cutting her off. She turned to me, her voice a clear warning. “Sadie, don’t make this more complicated than it needs to be.”
Cormac looked at me, his expression radiating confidence. “You understand, right?”
I looked at him — the man who was supposed to be my husband, asking to postpone our wedding so he could celebrate another woman.
Then I nodded calmly.
“All right.”
