The next morning, I was jolted awake by a door being kicked open.
Before I could even see who it was, a large hand seized me by the hair.
“Summer! You little snake! Where did you hide Lily?”
I was wrenched upright and came face to face with Leo’s eyes — bloodshot, wild with fury.
“Leo… what are you doing?”
I grabbed his wrist, trying to ease the tearing pain at my scalp.
But Leo roared and flung me to the floor.
My head cracked against the wardrobe. The room spun.
My adoptive parents heard the commotion and came rushing in.
“What on earth is going on?”
“Leo! Have you lost your mind? Why are you laying hands on Summer?”
My adoptive mother rushed to help me up, but Leo shoved her aside.
“Mom! Don’t let her innocent act fool you! Lily’s been missing since this morning! She did this!”
“Summer — what kind of game are you playing? Are you jealous that Lily was chosen? Did you think that was supposed to be you?”
“You ungrateful wretch! This family fed you, clothed you, loved you like their own daughter — and this is how you repay us?”
So Leo had been reborn too.
That explained the feeling I’d had that something was off about him.
I pushed through the pain and climbed to my feet.
“How could Lily just disappear?”
In this life, Lily already had the love she wanted — so why had she left again?
But as I stared at Leo’s red-rimmed, raging eyes, they began to blur and overlap with the Leo from my last life — the one who had dragged me away.
He had accused me of stealing Lily’s engagement, blamed me for their mother’s accident, told me to reflect on my sins.
And I had been too lost in grief over losing my mother to notice what happened after he left.
A group of men with liquor on their breath had closed in around me — leering at my swollen belly, mouths full of filth.

I had been terrified, pressing myself against the wall.
“Stay back! Get away from me! My brother’s coming right back!”
But they grabbed my ankles and dragged me down.
I screamed, kicking with every ounce of strength I had.
In the struggle, someone shoved me — my heavy body lost its balance and my stomach slammed into a jagged stone.
Blinding pain. I felt it — hot liquid pouring out of me.
“Summer! Stop spacing out! Say something!”
I snapped back to the present, weak and unsteady.
“I was in my room asleep all night. I didn’t—”
“Don’t give me that garbage!”
Leo didn’t give me a chance to finish. He pulled back his foot and kicked me.
I doubled over, dry-heaving from the pain.
My adoptive father’s voice cut through the room like a whip.
“Enough! What exactly happened? How did Lily disappear?”
“Dad! This woman hired someone to kidnap Lily!”
Leo advanced on me, his face dark as a storm cloud.
“You were picked up out of the gutter. Your life was worth nothing to begin with. But Lily is different — she’s a Harrington, and she can’t suffer.”
“She’s been taken, so we’ll offer you in exchange. Once Lily is safe, I’ll find a way to get you out.”
“And if Lily loses so much as a single hair…”
He grabbed me by the throat and slammed me against the wall, pinning me there.
“I will carve your face apart. Inch by inch.”
