Abandoned Luna’s Revenge Chapter 06
Miles’s pov
At two in the morning, I got a report. I was half-asleep at one of our outposts in the forest when one of the night scouts burst in. He said there was activity on the boundary we shared with Frost Fang.
My mind immediately went on full alert. According to his explanation, a large black wolf had crossed into our territo- ry. Our scouts followed closely and confirmed that the wolf had shifted into a girl and she had been seen yelling at Alpha Ashford and his family right at the border.
Usually, Alpha Kieran Black would’ve handled a disturbance like this, but he was out of town for a treaty meeting in the West. That left me with the job. As Beta, it wasn’t new to me to deal with things when the Alpha was gone. But a she-wolf sneaking in from Frost Fang and arguing with her Alpha family? That was unusual.
I ordered the scout to relay instructions to the others. I told them to keep a sharp eye on the area around the distur- bance and double the patrols across the Frost Fang line. If someone had the audacity to sneak into our territory, who knows what they might try next.
The scout nodded and took off. I gathered three warriors from the outpost and without wasting time, we shifted and ran toward the border.
As we moved swiftly across familiar paths, one of my warriors linked me through the mind connection.
“Sir,” he said, “I just received an update from the scout nearest the scene. The girl… apparently she’s Alpha Ashford’s daughter. One of the Frost Fang twins.”
Everyone in the region had heard of the Frost Fang twins. But as far as I knew, only one lived, the spoiled rotting one I had met at a treaty. The other twin was said to have died years ago in an accident.
But if this black wolf was the other twin… clearly still alive and yelling at her father… What the hell was going on?
We stopped a few yards from the border and shifted back into human form. I motioned for silence and crept up be- hind a thick stretch of underbrush. From there, we could see and hear everything.
The girl stood just inside our land, her back to us. Alpha Ashford stood on the other side of the fence with his Luna and a few others from frost fang. They were still in a heated argument when we got within earshot..
Alpha Ashford’s voice was the first I heard, “Enough! You’re coming home now, Selene. As your Alpha I am com- manding you, either you come back yourself or I come over there and drag your dead body back myself.”
A low grow! slipped past my lips before I could stop it. The threat didn’t sit right with me. For some reason, I didn’t want to see this girl hurt. The protectiveness that welled up in my chest made no sense. I didn’t even know her.
“Do your worst!” she shouted, “I’m not afraid of you anymore. I’d rather die here than go back to that prison you call a pack.”
I stared at her, at the wild, pained defiance in her posture, and something tugged at my chest. There was something so hauntingly familiar about her. Her scent.
It was… I knew that scent. No. No, it couldn’t be. I was so struck by disbelief that I nearly doubted my own senses.
I barely heard when Ashford’s Luna spoke. I was caught up in the shock brought on by Selene’s scent.
Her sister insulted her after her mother did. There was so much hate behind those words, it made me wonder what her family had put her through.
“I’m done,” she said as she stepped back from the fence, “I hope I find someone who puts me out of this misery quickly.”
She turned on her heel and walked away.
“Selene! Don’t you dare disobey me!”
After his roat, his men moved and started to push toward the fence. But before they could reach the chain fence I stepped forward. Out of the shadows, into the moonlight.
And just like that, every single person on the other side of the border froze. My warriors flanked me as we advanced towards Selene. Her scent was stronger now and I realized that I hadn’t been delusional, the scent was familiar for a reason.
“I wouldn’t take another step if I were you,” I said loudly, my voice ringing clear across the forest. Alpha Ashford’s men stopped dead in their tracks.
“I am Miles.” I said. “Beta of the Shadow Blade Pack.”
The moment the words left my mouth, I saw their eyes widen. Alpha Ashford’s jaw tensed.
“As second in command to the Alpha of Shadow blade,” I continued, “I declare asylum for Selene Ashford. She is un- der my pack’s protection now,” I said, raising my voice. “No one from Frost Fang shall cross this border to harm her Not without starting a war.”
Alpha Ashford stepped forward, eyes narrowing. “You think you can hide behind your Alpha’s title that girl is mine!”
I sneered. “Try me. Come over here and take her then, old man. See what happens.”
The flicker of horror shone in his eyes. He had probably realised why I offered Selene asylum,
I stepped forward slowly, and my scouts came out of hiding and fell in formation behind me. It was a blunt show of force. We weren’t here to start a war. But we’d finish it, if they forced our hand.
“Good night, Alpha Ashford,” I said with a mocking grin. “Sleep well.” Though I imagined he wouldn’t.
I turned my head, ready to speak to Selene… but she was already slipping into the thick of the forest. I could just make out the sway of her dark hair as she vanished into the trees.
I let out a short laugh. Smart of her to slip out while we were occupied, but I would soon make her understand that no harm would come to her on Shadow blade territory.
