A Wedding That Never Was Chapter 08
The day before the wedding.
After celebrating Chloe’s birthday with her at Disney, Alexander stayed directly in New York City.
The next day, he had planned to buy tickets and take Chloe back with him, but as soon as they arrived at the airport, she tugged at his sleeve and whined playfully: “Alex, I’ve never seen the ocean before. Will you go see it with me, please?”
For some reason, an image of Olivia lying alone in the hospital suddenly flashed through his mind. Just as he was about to refuse, Chloe shrank into his arms: “Alex, just one look, I’m begging you~”
Every time Chloe acted cute like this, he couldn’t help but grant her wishes.
After seeing the ocean, he took Chloe on an afternoon flight back to LA.
After dropping Chloe off at home, he planned to go see Olivia, worried she might be too nervous about getting married tomorrow and wanting to comfort her.
Just as he pushed the door open, a tearful, aggrieved voice came from behind: “Alex, I’m so scared living all alone. Can you stay with me for one last night?”
Reason and desire fought a battle in his mind, but remembering he was getting married tomorrow, he ultimately gave in.
Seeing him turn around, Chloe beamed with joy.
She took a bottle of red wine from the fridge: “Alex, let’s play a game, okay?”
Tomorrow was Alexander and Olivia’s wedding, a fact Chloe knew perfectly well. No matter how much she had hinted over the past few days, he had consistently pretended not to understand her little schemes.
Even though he had slept with her that day, he never mentioned it again. She was truly starting to panic and could only make one last gamble: get him drunk so he’d miss the wedding.
But Alexander had already made up his mind; he absolutely would not allow any accidents to ruin tomorrow’s wedding: “No more drinking. Let’s get to bed early.”
With that, he grabbed a blanket and made a bed on the sofa, leaving Chloe to a night of anxious insomnia.
Alexander sent a message to Olivia, but there was no response. He just assumed she was still mad at him.
Early the next morning, he went to the hospital to pick up Olivia, only to find her bed completely empty.
A trace of inexplicable panic began to well up in his chest, and he called Olivia over and over, but couldn’t get through.
Restless and anxious, he went to the nurses’ station to ask about Olivia, only to learn that she had already been discharged the night before last.
His heart grew more and more frantic, but he kept comforting himself, thinking that perhaps Olivia was already at the wedding venue.
Soon, he arrived at the hotel.
But when he pushed the doors open, the banquet hall he had booked was displaying posters of a strange couple.
He rushed over to the front desk: “Aren’t the bride and groom here Alexander and Olivia?”
“Oh, you mean them. They canceled their reservation a month ago.”
Alexander was stunned. His face turned deathly pale as he suddenly felt that something was already beyond saving.
On the verge of a breakdown, he called Arthur: “Grandpa, did they change the venue? Why didn’t anyone tell me? Where is Olivia right now?”
“Olivia? She already left LA yesterday,” Arthur replied.
