A Toast To A Love That Never Was Chapter 23
In the end, Melanie still left. She walked away without any hesitation, but her decision didn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
Once she’d left, Harry and his friends immediately let out a breath of relief. If she had chosen to stay, it was clear that she’d be forced to accept Dustin’s love for the rest of her life. If that were to happen, she’d never truly be happy.
Maybe this was what it meant to be the right person at the wrong time. Dustin and Melanie both loved each other. But unfortunately, they never felt the same way about each other at the same time.
When she loved him the most, all he cared about was his own pride and ego. As a result, he directed his attention to the person who’d abandoned him instead of caring about someone worth his time.
Dustin only regretted his actions and tried to win Melanie over again after she’d left him. Unfortunately for him, no one would wait around forever.
One week later, Melanie and Zachary proceeded with their wedding as planned.
Melanie didn’t invite her parents. So, the duties her father would have had at the wedding were carried out by Lawrence instead.
She was holding Lawrence’s hand while wearing a voluminous dress that dragged across the floor. From a distance, she looked just like a princess.
Despite the fact that Melanie was his daughter–in–law, Lawrence felt as though he was giving his own daughter away when he walked her down the aisle.
“Don’t you dare mistreat her, you brat,” he warned Zachary, wiping away tears.
Zachary looked like he was over the moon. He took Melanie’s hand from Lawrence and declared, “From now on, I will protect
Mel from harm and love her for the rest of my life.”
It felt like he was making a promise to both Lawrence and Melanie.
Melanie couldn’t help but blush at how blunt he was being.
Staring at him with a loving gaze, she flashed him a smile and said, “I trust you.”
With the biggest smile on his face, the host continued with the program.
“Do you, Mr. Carter, take Ms. Wright to be your wife, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?”
“I do.”
“Do you, Ms. Wright, take Mr. Carter to be your husband, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?”
Melanie turned around and gave Zachary’s hand a subtle squeeze. Then, with a huge grin on her face, she replied, “I do.”
Subsequently, the guests broke into a huge round of applause.
After the happy couple exchanged wedding rings, the host continued, “You may now kiss the bride!”
Melanie had never done something so intimate in front of so many people before. She watched as Zachary lifted her veil over her head and leaned in.
When he was an inch away from her face, he paused and said, ” Close your eyes, silly.”
The guests let out a quiet laugh.
Blushing profusely, she closed her eyes. Afterward, before she knew it, she felt his lips on hers.
Dustin, who was watching everything unfold offstage, was heartbroken. But despite how he felt, he had no right to be upset about it.
He was the one who’d brought this upon himself. He ended up losing the person he should have cherished the most due to his arrogance.
As the rest of the audience cheered, he left the venue alone.
The banquet hall was buzzing with guests. Outside, Dustin was confronted by policemen who’d come for him with an arrest warrant.
“Captorn Police Department. Mr. Hart, we have proof that you engaged in false imprisonment by unlawfully detaining someone in your home. We are now executing a summons in accordance with the law. We’d like you to cooperate with us, please.”
Dustin fell silent for a moment before turning around to glance at the banquet hall again.
The police couldn’t have picked a better date.
He nodded and followed the officers back to their vehicle without putting up a fight.
Melanie didn’t see Dustin again until three months later.
After returning from their honeymoon, she and Zachary stayed with Zachary’s grandparents. They only decided to leave when they had to return to Amora to tend to their clinic.
Right after they arrived at the airport, Melanie caught sight of someone she didn’t expect to see.
Dustin was casually sitting on the steps outside the airport hall, surrounded by a couple of stray kittens, who were begging for some of his food. He was petting the kittens absentmindedly when he looked up and saw Melanie.
Picking up a kitten with one hand, he slowly approached her and asked, “You’re not coming back, are you?”
She nodded in response.
He lowered his head and smiled resignedly. Then, he said, ”
Goodbye, then. Have a safe flight.”
Dustin watched as Zachary and Melanie disappeared into the crowd. The pair were never returning to Wystoria, and he was unable to leave the country. So, this time, they were saying goodbye to each other for good.

Good story!
