A Toast To A Love That Never Was Chapter 20

Melanie couldn’t understand why Dustin was doing this. He couldn’t possibly lock her up forever. She’d have to leave eventually, so why was he wasting his time on something so pointless?

Dustin had never cared about how long things would last. What scared him was the thought that she might still leave him one day -just like how she did years ago. Hence, he wanted to spend as much time with her as possible.

On the third evening Melanie spent at the villa, Dustin returned to see her once again. This time, he brought a large number of moth orchids with him.

When he asked her if there was anything she wanted two days ago, she asked him for moth orchids. Frankly speaking, the climate in Captorn wasn’t the best for growing moth orchids.

However, with enough patience and care, it was entirely possible for the orchids to thrive.

Since she had nothing better to do, she had a lot of free time to care for the flowers. She carefully moved the orchids into the  greenhouse one by one and tended to them personally. Once Dustin saw that she genuinely liked the flowers, he finally relaxed.

After all the flowers were taken care of, she turned to Dustin, who’d been waiting at the greenhouse’s entrance all this time, and flashed him a smile. “Thank you.”

Barely able to contain his joy, Dustin waved her off and said, “I’m glad you like them.”

After a brief pause, he added, “As long as it makes you happy, I’ll do everything in my power to give you whatever you want.”

If he said this to Melanie back then, she’d probably have felt incredibly moved. After all, nothing was more touching than someone you love vowing to bring you everything you wanted.

Unfortunately, they were no longer the people they used to be.

Back then, Dustin claimed that she was nothing but a sister to him. Then, after he struck her because of Jane and didn’t care that she’d fallen down the stairs herself, she completely lost all her feelings for him.

With each passing day at the villa, Melanie noticed that the place was starting to look more and more like the home they’d once shared. Once she began to notice this, she smiled and didn’t say anything about it. If Dustin wasn’t going to be honest with her, then she’d simply feign ignorance.

She went about her own business each day. After Dustin got off work, he’d bring his laptop home with him and quietly be in the same space with her. During their meals, he’d sit beside her and always make sure she had enough to eat.

One day, he had to stay at the office for a while longer than he usually did. Worried that she might get bored, he even asked Harry to head over to the villa to keep her company.

Harry only found out that Melanie had been trapped in the villa the entire time after he saw her in person.

“Fucking hell! Has he gone mad?” he immediately exclaimed.

Melanie was watering her moth orchids. Unlike Harry, she looked completely calm.

Once she heard what he’d just said, she arched her brow and said, “I thought you were all aware of this.”

Dustin hardly kept anything from his group of close friends.

Whether it was the after–effects of his accident, his desire to cut her off and be with Jane, or even his wish to be with Melanie again later on, he told his friends everything.

So, she naturally assumed they all knew she was being kept in his villa, too. To her surprise, Harry was acting as if he was hearing about it for the first time.

Harry shook his head. Taken aback by how unfazed she was, he asked, “Aren’t you getting married soon? Why are you so calm about this?”

“There’s no point in being anxious.” She pursed her lips and looked nonchalant.

Then, she continued wryly, “He’s already removed everything that can be used to contact the outside world from the villa. Aside from tending to my flowers, there’s nothing else I can do.”

Harry felt slightly upset about what she’d just mentioned. He wanted to say something, but he found himself at a loss for words.

He couldn’t go to Dustin and advise him to let her go. However, he wasn’t able to promise her that he’d find a way to get her out of the villa, either.

Many of Dustin’s close friends came from families who had business ties with the Hart Group. So, they couldn’t afford to get on Dustin’s bad side or turn their backs on their respective families to help Melanie.

Thankfully, Melanie never expected them to do so. Moreover, she also believed that Zachary wouldn’t keep her waiting for too long.
