When We Met Again Our Son Was Five Chapter 05

The silence lasted three full seconds before the room blew up.

“What? He’s the father?”

“When did Tristan Caldwell have a kid?”

“What did he just say? He begged her to draw him?”

I pressed myself against the crack in the door, and my jaw nearly hit the floor.

Lucas was in Tristan’s arms, and his little face went blank, too. He looked up at the man he’d been fighting with just yesterday, opened his mouth, and couldn’t get a word out.

“Mister, my mom said I don’t have a dad!”

The police officer froze with the phone still in his hand, and his serious expression turned completely confused.

“Mr. Caldwell, are you saying…”

“I said I’m his father.” Tristan’s voice wasn’t loud, but every word landed clearly. “We can do a paternity test anytime!”

Every bit of color drained from Josephine’s face.

She froze, then hurried forward and grabbed Tristan’s arm. Her voice shook, and tears thickened every word.

“Tris, what are you talking about? Are you so angry that you’re not thinking clearly?”

She tugged at his sleeve, her eyes rimmed red.

“I know you don’t want to marry me, but you can’t claim something like this just to get out of it. This kid is exactly like his mother. Neither of them can keep their hands clean, so how can you—”

Tristan looked down at her, his eyes so calm that it was frightening. “I found her. Since there’s already a wedding today, I’ll marry her instead.”

The whole room erupted.

“What? He’s marrying that fake heiress?”

“What is going on? Wasn’t Tristan engaged to Josephine?”

“The kid is his, and now he wants to marry the kid’s mother? Then what does that make Josephine?”

Clarissa’s face turned dark with anger, and she rushed forward.

“Tristan Caldwell, what kind of nonsense are you saying? Today is your wedding with Josie, and in front of all these guests, you’re saying you want to marry that impostor?”

Josephine stood frozen in place as her expression twisted.

She suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Tristan’s sleeve.

“You’ve lost your mind, Tristan. You’ve completely lost it! Today is our wedding. Do you have any idea what you’re saying? Mom and Dad are here, so are our friends and family. How do you expect me to ever show my face again after this?”

Tristan stopped looking at her and carried Lucas toward the kitchen.

“Wait,” the officer said, stopping him. “Mr. Caldwell, we haven’t finished dealing with the ring.”

Tristan paused and looked down at Lucas.

“Did you take the ring?”

“No.” Lucas’ voice was low, but it was firm.

Tristan nodded, then raised his head and looked at the officer.

“He said he didn’t steal it. Pull the security footage.”

Josephine’s lips trembled.

Tristan added, “There are cameras in every corner of this ballroom. How the ring ended up in his pocket will be obvious once we check.”

He looked at Josephine.

“What do you think?”

Josephine’s lips kept trembling, and her eyes were completely red, but she couldn’t say a single word.
