Not Waiting For You Chapter 06
Tyrone unlocked his phone screen again.
The last time he and Amira talked was his last message to her, which went, “I won’t move back until you’re sensible.”
It didn’t feel right.
He knew her. They had fought before. Even when she gave him the silent treatment, she tried to catch his attention in this way or that.
This time, however, he had moved out for five days, and she had done nothing. She hadn’t even posted anything on social media.
“Tyrie,” a communal friend of theirs exclaimed while showing something on his phone to Tyrone, “check this out. Amira looks stunning in this wedding dress.”
Tyrone came to his senses and looked.
It was a post of nine photos from Cynthia’s Instagram account.
In the photo in the center, Amira was standing in front of a picture window, wearing a wedding gown.
The sunshine slanting down formed a soft radiance around her.
Her head slightly bowed, she gazed at her hand while gently stroking her skirt with a smile.
She looked fabulous.
It had been a long time since he last saw such beauty in her.
There was no sign of anxiety on her face. Only serenity remained.
Friends of Tyrone and Amira all liked the photos and made comments under the post. “Amira is enchanting!”
“Tyrone is a lucky guy!”
“Congratulations! You two are finally getting married!”
Cynthia blacklisted Tyrone’s accounts on social media.
So, he couldn’t see her posts.
If it weren’t for his friend, he wouldn’t have known about these photos.
Anger rose inside him.
Was Amira serious?
And she made a big deal out of it.
“Huh. She seems serious about it,” Tyrone remarked. “Let her. I’m not going. I’ll see how the wedding will go through without a groom.”
A friend of his persuaded with an awkward smile, “Tyrie, come on. Is it really necessary?”
“Some things are too serious. I can’t let her get her way in everything,” Tyrone interrupted him,” especially when that friend of hers is egging her on all the time. Afterward…”
He paused thoughtfully. “I’ll let her understand she must keep some people at arm’s length.”
In his eyes, Cynthia was always a bad influence. He was determined to keep her away from Amira.
On October 28.
It was the next day after Cynthia’s post.
Tyrone woke up early in the morning.
At the beginning of this year, Amira’s parents had visited and dined with them.
They had mentioned that October 28th was the last auspicious day of the year.
If they postponed their wedding again, they’d have to wait till next year.
Back then, putting some food on the old couple’s plates, Tyrone had only smiled, “There’s no rush. We can wait.”
In fact, he thought Amira’s parents were too superstitious. Getting married was a serious matter. How could they pick a day based on superstition?
Against his expectations, Amira took it seriously and wanted to get married on this day.
His friends had been calling and messaging him nonstop.
“Tyrie, you’re seriously not going to show up? One word from you and we’re ready to go.”
“Should I arrange escort cars? We can make it if we set off now.”
With a sneer, Tyrone replied in the group chat with his friends, “No rush. Let her wait.”
Picturing Amira waiting for him in a wedding dress in the bridal chamber, checking the time repeatedly, restless and eager, he felt better and wanted to punish her more.
He would let her know what it was like to be panicky. Then, she wouldn’t make the same mistake again.
Out of the blue, someone in the group chat released a screenshot of Cynthia’s Instagram update.
It was a picture of a sweet and romantic bedroom with auspicious and joyful decorations.
There were also heart-shaped balloons.
Rose petals could be seen on the bed.
The warm sunshine streaming through the window added to the atmosphere of happiness.
The caption read, “May happiness fill each of your days, my girl. Mr. Groom, come quickly!”
His friends all got excited.
“My, my! The house has been decorated!”
“It’s so… Tyrie, if you don’t go, even I can’t accept it.”
“Tyrone! Are you a man or not? Shake a leg! Enough with your tantrum. You may lose Amira forever!”
“Give us the address. We’ll go with you.”
The light of the screen was reflected on Tyrone’s face.
Staring at the picture, he couldn’t help tightening his grip on the phone.
Each detail of the room’s decoration was calling to the groom, waiting for his arrival.
He imagined how surprised Amira would be when he opened the door and came in with other people cheering aside.
Then, he turned around and looked at the closet, where the customized suit was hung in the most conspicuous place along with a tie, cufflinks, and leather shoes.
Unaccountably, he had his assistant prepare these things a week ago.
With his friends urging him persistently, Tyrone wavered.
“Cut it out. Quiet,” he said in a voice message, sounding baffled and irritable, as if he compromised only because his friends were pressuring him too much. “I need to get changed first.”
He stood up and walked to the closet. His steps were quicker than before, but he wasn’t aware of it.
After buttoning his shirt, he was about to put on the suit jacket when his phone rang.
It was a call from a friend of his, who had gone there first. “Tyrie, why was your and Amira’s new apartment sold? Where are we supposed to pick her up?”
