He Gave Her The Best So I Left Him With Nothing Chapter 16
Cormac said nothing.
His lips were pressed into a thin line. His handsome face was a canvas of conflict and shame, but he couldn’t push out a denial.
His silence was the only answer I needed.
Suddenly, I smiled. And for the first time, my heart felt light.
“I have work to do.” I turned my back on them and crossed to my workbench, easing the studio door shut with a soft click.
It didn’t stay shut for long. Marguerite shoved it open and stormed in, her face a mask of wounded pride. “You finally beat me for once. You must be thrilled.”
I looked at her, baffled.
She folded her arms. “On your wedding day, I confessed to Cormac outside the hotel. I told him we could start over. He turned me down.”
Her voice climbed, sharp and incredulous. “He turned me down for you. Then he spent a month hunting for you like a madman, even hired a private investigator to track down this godforsaken place. For once, you were chosen ahead of me. Are you happy now?”
So that was it.
I looked at her, and felt nothing. Not the faintest ripple of triumph.
“There’s nothing to be happy about.”
Marguerite froze.
I said calmly, “After spending more than twenty years as the backup, one single moment where he finally turns around and picks me doesn’t mean a thing.”
I took in the disbelief on her face and delivered each word with finality.
“That’s not a victory, Marguerite. It’s just belated charity. And it’s meaningless.”
