The Moment I Let You Go Chapter 07
A second later, his eyes dropped to his belongings piled up in the trash.
He spun around and slammed the balcony door behind him.
He was pissed.
It was like he completely resented me, absolutely sickened by the fact that I looked happy.
My good mood instantly evaporated.
“Daniel,” I murmured.
“This is my home.
I don’t have a lot of money, and I can’t give you a lavish lifestyle.
“Being seen with me is just going to embarrass you – I’m so painfully average.
“You don’t have to try this hard to please me just because I brought you home!”
Affection always fades eventually, anyway.
There was no point in his giving me false hope.
It was a lot easier to deal with someone who was distant from the start than someone who was sweet at first, only to turn freezing cold later.
Daniel looked totally blindsided.
He tilted his head back to meet my eyes, the sunlight catching perfectly in his pastel-blue irises.
“Ms. Lexington, are you telling me that the woman I fell in love with at first sight is just average?
“I think you seriously underestimate yourself.
“Besides, one day you’ll realize I’m the one reaching way out of my league to be with you.”
That was ridiculous.
Mermen were the most expensive, luxurious werebeasts in existence.
People paid insane amounts of money for them, gambling that their tears would produce high-grade pearls and make them rich.
He was incredibly valuable.
I was incredibly lucky just to have him.
How could he possibly be the one reaching?
The next day, a new package showed up.
When I tore it open, I realized it wasn’t for Daniel.
It was a dress I hadn’t been able to resist ordering for myself while buying his daily supplies.
Holding the fabric up, I stole a quick glance at the aquarium.
Daniel still had his eyes closed, resting quietly in the water.
Taking the opening, I slipped into the dress and gave it a few twirls in front of the full-length mirror.
Suddenly, I caught Daniel’s reflection right behind me.
I froze.
The flowing hem of the dress flared out, then fluttered back down, hanging flat and lifeless against my legs.
“Does it look weird?”
I gripped the fabric of the skirt, a massive wave of embarrassment crashing over me.
“A gorgeous dress wasted on a truly ugly person.
“The dress is stunning, of course.
The person wearing it, though…”
Whenever I’d bought new clothes or jewelry in the past, Killian would relentlessly tear down my appearance.
Over time, I’d gotten too terrified to even try looking nice.
“Not at all.”
Daniel came over and wrapped his arms around me from behind, his tail curling comfortably around my calf.
“I was only staring because you look so beautiful.
“Ms. Lexington, you are wonderful, and you look absolutely gorgeous.
“But… are you going to let him come back to you?
“You two were together for five years.
You have such a soft heart – if he begs, you’ll probably forgive him, won’t you?”
Feeling his insecurity radiating off him, I stood on my tiptoes and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.
“I won’t.
“You treat me so well, so I’m going to treat you even better.”
It was the truth – Daniel was amazing.
If a patient showed up in the middle of the night with a cut finger, Daniel would be waiting with a warm glass of water the second I finished.
It was a brutal contrast to Killian, who used to scream at me for letting the cold air under the covers whenever a late-night medical emergency dragged me out of bed.
I couldn’t stop comparing the two of them.
And the more I did, the more I realized what a genuinely awful guy Killian was – because he really, truly was.
Daniel and I were curled up on the couch watching a movie when Nadia showed up completely unannounced.
She took the armchair, angling her legs elegantly to the side.
But for all her composed posture, her fingers kept twisting together in her lap, giving away her nerves.
I brought her a mug of hot water.
She shot me a conflicted look and cut right to the chase.
“Killian went into his rut.
