A Love That Never Existed Chapter 45

When word of Damiel’s death reached the Vandrel Group, Yvosha was in the middle of a meeting.

Her assistant came in and bent close, whispering in her ear.

Yvosha’s hand, mid-turn of a page, paused.

Then she lifted her gaze to the executives around the table.

“Continue.”

When the meeting wrapped up and everyone had cleared out, she leaned back in her chair and let her eyes drift to the window.

It was an overcast day.

The sky hung low and heavy.

He was dead.

She didn’t feel the satisfaction she had once pictured.

Nor any real grief.

Just a vast, hollow emptiness.

Her assistant came back in, holding a tablet.

“The Vorretti family has issued the obituary. The funeral is in three days. Should we-?”

“I’m not going.”

Yvosha rose and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window.

“Have a wreath ordered and sent.”

“Of course,” the assistant said. “What should the card say?”

Yvosha was silent for a moment.

What was there to say? Between her and Damiel – the hatred, the resentment, the tangled snarl of their past – all of it had ended the instant he stopped breathing.

“Leave it blank.”

After the funeral, Damiel’s lawyer requested a meeting with Yvosha.

“Miss Calderan, this is the will Mr. Vorretti drew up before his death.”

The lawyer slid the document across the table.

“His entire private estate has been used to establish the Petra Leukemia Relief Foundation. The foundation itself will be run by a professional team, but Mr. Vorretti specifically stipulated that you alone hold oversight, including veto rights.”

Yvosha picked up the document and read it for a long time.

“I understand.”

After the lawyer had gone, Yvosha drove out to the cemetery.

Petra’s grave was clean and well looked-after.

The girl in the photograph was smiling brightly.

Yvosha laid a bouquet of flowers in front of the headstone and cracked open a can of Coke.

Petra had always wanted to drink one, but the doctors had never allowed it.

“Petra, I came to see you.”

“The man who kept you from your surgery… he’s dead.”
